Engine tapping cold start

Postby Whitebull on Mon, 23 May 2016 6:09 +0000

Hi all,
My 5L has developed a tapping sound but only at cold start up. Last for about 20 seconds then disappears. More noticeable now with colder mornings than in summer. Valve clearances have been checked and are in spec. Using Caltex delo 400 mutigrade (previously delo silver) and only 185000km on the clock. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Wow that is a low km 5L.

Does the oil light go out immediately? The 5L was known for oil drain back at rest.

Il check the light tomorrow morning and let you know.

Got the car off an old farmer a few years back with only 115000kms on. Love the car. Simple and easy to service.

Not much noise this morning and oil light switched off after about 4 seconds.

Yeah, my oil light goes out after 4 seconds most of the time. It can sound a but rattly at cold start, but smooths out once the light goes out.

I used to really worry about the slow oil light, but its been doing it for nearly 35000km so I just figured it is how it is.

Like everything, keep an eye on it and if it gets worse maybe talk to a mechanic, but I reckon these are just noisy engines.

I'll keep an eye on it but I'm not too concerned. Like the pesky little oil leak at the bottom of the timing cover I think I'll just have to live with it.
