Burst of white smoke when cruising

Postby peachy534 on Fri, 12 Feb 2016 4:36 +0000

Hi Just wondering if any one has had this problem I have a 2010 diesel hilux with 140000km and twice I have had it surge for a few seconds and puff a big cloud of white smoke out the back while cruising at 100kmh . It never blows smoke any other time not on start up like other hilux's with injector problems. Any ideas I thought I had done the turbo when it first did it but I all seems good.

Propably bad fuel or some water accumulated in your tank from bad fuel :)Did you notice any power surge during that white smoke?

No water in water trap on filter and car felt like it accelerated the first time it did it and second time it had cruise control on and it surged a bit.

White smoke is usually unburned diesel coming through (black smoke is partially burned diesel). Water getting in can cause white smoke, but it is unlikely to be getting through the injection system, more common is water getting past a faulty head gasket. But this does not sound like your problem.

The problem is more likely an injector or injection timing fault. The ECU uses data from a number of sensors to determine the injection timing. An intermittent fault on a sensor is possible, and this should trigger a fault code in the ECU.

You will really need to hook the vehicle up to a computer to read the injector feedback values and see if there are any fault codes stored in the ECU. This should help pinpoint the problem.

I hope this helps.

Regarding these injector values ( and sorry for hijacking your thread) i had recently my car read these values.we took it for a 20 min run and hooked it on the computer.3 injectors read around 0.1 and the no1 sas flactuating around -1.5.what does that mean?Toyota guy told me its under specs

Plus or minus 3.0 cubic millimetres is usually considered within specs by Toyota. Within this range the ECU is apparently able to manage injection volumes for a smooth idle.

While these feedback volumes do not tell you everything, they do give an indication of how worn your your injectors are, or are not.

Could be a sticking injector also. Most diesel fuels these days are low sulphur and have bugger all lubricating properties. Quite common for people with mechanical injection systems to use a mineral based 2 stroke oil each tank to lubricate and quieten injection system noise etc
