valve clearances

I have had a 93 model Hilux 2.8 D for 12 months. I have little in the way of service history and I am wondering how often the valve clearances should be checked. I have a slight leak in rocker cover gasket and would do the valves whilst the cover is off. Jim

Pretty labour intensive job if I remember correctly. They are a shim over bucket design so you have to measure your clearances, remove the shim and measure it then subtract the values and then order a new one and replace it. Can turn into an expensive job.

Still easier then adjusting the valves on the d4d.

If you are going to take the cover off best to check the clearances if it has never been done or you don't know if it has been done.

I have a 93 and at 180,000 the clearances were well in spec. Checking is an easy job with a set of feeler gauges.

As said by others adjusting them requires using shims and this is a pain. It is a cam shaft out job and you need a micrometer.

You measure the existing clearance with the cam in and then take the cam out and remove the shims and measure these with the micrometer. You uses these measurements to select a new shim that brings the clearance back to the factory spec

My recommendation is to check them and if they are out of spec get a pro to adjust them.

Toyota have a special service tool to do the job without having to take out the cam shaft. Approx $150. Cheaper than $400-500 I was quoted from local mechanic. Shims are $20 from toyota

Mate is this fact or something you have been told. Not being smart, just checking to see if this is definite as most of the mechanics I have spoken to say it is camshaft out. This includes Boxhead. This is a tool I would love to buy if you're sure about it . I just don't want to ring Toyota spares and make a fool of myself if the tool doesn't exist. Any more information you can give appreciated. This is the 3l D4D we are talking about I hope.
Cheers, Dave.

There is a tool for 1hz- hd engines for compressing the springs but I don't see there being enough room in a 1kd to do the same trick

This is the Pre 2005 section Dave ;). D4D's are over on the greener side.

Yep pre 2005 trusty 5L engine. Don't know anything about the plus 05 models other than they look good.

For the earlier engines, they had shims. I have the genuine tool to do this job. Pretty easy, really. Like most things with the right tools.
The 1KD-FTVs it's the camshafts out, and a big job. Stupid really, as the cams run directly onto the buckets instead of shims.

It can be done with the cam left in on the 5L at least. I am planning on attacking this soon.

I got this tool, it looks to be very similar.

Here is the job on a 1hz which has the same shim diameter.

I will let you know if the tool works.

During the last injector washer recall for my 07 D4D, I requested them to do the clearance check with my own cost. Came back with report showing all in spec. They conducted two tests according to the invoice with no charge, one acoustic check and one with measurement gauge. The manager said they have never found any D4D being out of spec for valve clearance.

That tool I posted a link to worked a treat. Took about an hour to check them all and measure the shims. Now I need to order 3 shims and install them.

Good to hear timdk. I haven't used mine yet. Let us know how much the shims are and where you got them from.

I just ordered the shims form here: 4x4world.com.au they were between $10.90 and $12.80 each plus $8 shipping.
