They conducted two tests according to the invoice with no charge, one acoustic check and one with measurement gauge. The manager said they have never found any D4D being out of spec for valve clearance.

Weird how a Toyota dealer has never found any d4d out of spec.
I know they don't check them much, you know every 40k, as per toyota service schedule.
If they did there would never had to be the "customer service exercise". ;)
The Injectors come out & new seats/sheets as part of the job.

Anyway I find them out quite regularly. Usually only a little bit out.
It's really part of doing the injector repayment job. Do it all once, don't keep opening the fuel system.
Anyway I check them as part of the job, so I guess why that's why I see a lot, I check them.........
I'm not convinced their spec is really acceptable for minimum spec, so I can confirm my 1kd is out!
I suspect there are thousands that are a little bit out. So I'm not concerned about it.
I'm keeping the Klm's up to try & stay ahead of the rest, so I can speak from my experience & say less clearance is ok, at least for now.
So far so good, also many customers that were not in a position to pay for an adjustment at the time.
Or leave the vehicle for the time it takes to do & wait for parts etc.
New DENSO Injectors are the go! New genuine parts.

Check your injectors about every 10,000k.

Did the clearances on the weekend and it made a noticeable difference to power and smoothness. I also happened to find out that shims can be sourced here: http://www.precisionintl.com/ for $5 a pop.

TimDK how many were out and by how much? I had two out - no.1 exhaust and no.4 inlet. Both just outside spec and both tight. Btw toyota shims $17.50 and they don't keep them in stock - pretty shit given that they are a serviceable part

Three were out, no.1 in/ex and no.2 ex. They were all tight but no.1 ex was very tight. It was 0.2mm and the spec is 0.4mm - 0.5mm.

I guess once the valve got hot is was not closing fully, losing compression and pumping exhaust back into the inlet. Once the job was done, what I thought to be blow by out of the crankcase breather was reduced.

Valve clearances on a 1KD-FTV, and this is on a 150 Prado.
Angled feeler gauges are the go for doing this job.
Just use the minimum setting.
Exhaust : 0.35mm.
Inlet : 0.20mm.

I recently found a 2009 120 series at 140k only, out down to 0.05, minimum spec is 0.20.
It has to come back they could not afford the extra, but it ran like a dream with the new injectors etc.

So don't think you will hear anything, you will know they are out when it starts burning out valves if they are not checked.
That low one was in no.4 cylinder usually always the worst! Followed by no.3
The soot is very abrasive & wearing your valves/seats away.

Many will be ok, but it's worth the check & prevention $$$$

Much cheaper to reduce the soot sooner

It's the dry soot I find the worst worn, the wet ones are much better.
