Hesitation and Maintenance of the 2TR

Postby nirtime on Thu, 15 Jan 2015 10:09 +0000

Hello everyone, I have a 2008 SR5 with the 2TR-FE(2.7l vvt-i). It has just broken 95,000kms and I am due for a belt change at the 100,000km mark.
During its life span, being owned by the family since new this ute has never given us any problems other than a dirty MAF sensor which I clean religiously along with the K&N air filter. Other than that we have only had to change the valve cover gasket, oil is always changed on time and unfortunately the factory long life coolant was drained and replaced a few years ago as we did not realise the Hilux in our country came with the long life coolant.

Recently, around 93,500kms I have noticed that the ute has become a bit lazy. It requires more throttle to take off from a stop and in the lower rpms it isn't as responsive as it used to be. The MAF sensor was thorougly cleaned but the problem still persists, the throttlebody is also very clean despite never being removed/cleaned before. Idling seems to be the same although I cannot say that with 100% confidence as I don't remember what it used to idle like before. What may be the cause of this issue?

Also, what do you Hilux gurus recommend servicing/changing at such mileage?

No timing belt is is chain driven and if you have been using E10 in the fuels system it sometimes fouls the fuel injectors. Have them removed and cleaned. You will be suprised the difference that makes.

Thank you boxhead55, I have not been using E10, I usually use the Gumout Fuel System Cleaner once every 3 months but I will have the injectors cleaned.

Update: I have replaced the MAF Gasket(O-ring) and have since regained all lost power. The size for the O ring is 2x27mm.

I would never of thought that the maf o-ring would make such a difference!

Eventually it had gotten to the point where sometimes there would be no power when the gas pedal was to the floor. It was very dangerous and a major issue. After changing the O-ring the idle is a lot smoother and honestly I think the idle is comparable to the D4D now, which is much smoother imo.
