Got a slow oil leak appearing at the bottom of timing cover near sump. Not sure if it is the cam / crank seals or if it's the sump gasket. Any ideas?

Cause it's on the plastic Id say front crank seal.

I may have wiped it there! Would that change diagnosis?

Ok so I got this looked at by a mechanic and it was a minor crank seal leak. Put a kit and waterpump through it using genuine toyota seals. About $800 all up which is about what I estimated. Anyway the leak has started again very slowly. With the new seals I would have thought this would have resolved the issue. Is there anything I have missed. Just want to informed a bit before I head back to the shop and approach them about the reoccurring leak?

I have same problem on 5le. At first I thought leak was coming from crank seal... Turns out it was the sump gasket which sort of comes to a meeting point right at same spot. Unfortunately with the ifs setup in these to remove the sump and replace gasket the motor needs to be lifted out. In older solid axles you can just unbolt and stop it off.... I got a mechanic to quote me to replace seals when had timing kit done... Was 600$ in labour with removing engine etc. I have just seeped mine up with a little hi temp silicone and seems to be going OK... Let me know if you have an easier way of replacing these seels .. if it was mine i would try giving it a good clean up and try sealing it from the outside with high temp silicone as mentioned, if it doesnt work it hasnt cost much to try.

Would want to be careful that the timing cover doesn't inadvertently get sealed up tight cause if the leak is from the crank seal then oil will pool inside the cover and damage the belt

Any progress on this? I have the same issue, got the belt, pump and front seal replaced and the leak has returned, but a lot slower. Could the crank be scored or something?

I'm just monitoring at the moment. Only a very small amount of oil and nothing on the driveway. Mechanic said it could be residue but it should have cleared by now I would have thought. Crank could be scored but would have hoped that the Mec would have checked that.

Well my motor has over 300,000 km on the clock so I figure a couple of drops of oil a week is not too much to worry about. BTW I am in Adelaide as well.

That's basically what the Mec said. Shame though I like things to be perfect

Ok have been monitoring the leak since March when I had the seals replaced and it is still there. Not much probably less than a half a cup every 5000km. I can't afford to spend any more $ on it yet. What are the chances of it still being the crank seal? Should I be letting the garage know that the leak hasn't been fixed? If it's just the sump I'm not to concerned but being a perfectionist it's doing my head in a bit.

I was checking on my leak, and I stuck my finger up into the crankshaft pulley area, which now seems to be dry. So I reckon I had a crank seal leak and a sump leak. Once the crank seal was replaced, the leak slowed a lot.

So I added some liqi moly oil resealer, which is supposed to rejuvenate seals and my leak appears to have stopped. For $15 it is worth a shot.

I think i have a similar problem. My misso only noticed the leak this evening, i mainly use the truck for driving to and from work, roughly 80km a day. I really just need some clarification.
