2.8 3L power mods

Postby sideshow_bob on Sat, 10 May 2014 7:02 +0000

has any1 hotted up a 3l motor? is there any other power mods other then a turbo kit? and what kind of power figures can i get out of a 3l? how much boost can a std 3l handle? and what is the weak point in the motor that lets go first under higher boost applications?

hey mate, i had a 2.8 1996 model with a dts turbo, front mount intercooler, safari tough clutch and 3 inch exhaust and it would hammer! i didnt get it put on the dyno but i was running 14 pounds of boost and it was quicker around town then a stock d4d hilux. it drove sweet as.

stock motor internals? ive been told that the 3l's can handle as much boost as u can throw at them as long as u can keep the exhaust temps down.
so the motor handled the 14psi with no problem?

sideshow_Bob, 3L motors aren't known for running high boost reliably and certainly can't handle 'as much boost you can throw at them'. There is so much information about these motors with regards to mods, do's and don'ts, turbo setups. Just type into google and you will find it. This forum doesn't quite have the resources for the old girls yet.

i through it sounded to good to be true with how strong they where, ive noticed there not a real lot of info on here about the old girls, yeah im looking on google atm but not finding the info i want yet, is there any other forums that have good info on the ln106's that i should have a look at. not looking for huge power numbers but would like to as much as i can while been reliable, would like to know the weak links in the motor and how far they can be pushed befor they go bang, i like doing things once and doing it right but can get a little over excited at times and waste money, but trying to limit that. maybe i should just buy a old chev v8 Diesel and be done with it lol

My uncle has an old lux that had a turbo'd 3l engine in it. After blowing 2 engines, he decided to replace the turbo 3l with a N/A 5l engine from the later model. Recons it's the best thing he ever did. Same power as the 3l, but supper reliable. Simple swap too, only needed to change a couple of fuel and water hoses.

ok looking at turbo with water to air intercooler to keep egt's down so i can run about 12psi maybe higher if can keep egt's low enough, from what i can find most problems they have with boost is egt's to high and coursing engine failures. looks like no off shelf parts like pistons or rods but surprised no 1 has tried custom rod n pistons could get both for around $2000 and dont see why u couldnt run high boost like around 20psi with pistons n rods done

Boost provides nothing but air. What causes the problems is how much fuel the tuner adds to the additional air.

Frequently enthusiasm overrides good sense with the fuel and AFRs are greatly richened up, as compared to standard, in pursuit of power. Trouble is then not far away. Enthusiastic driving of the thus modified vehicle doesn't help.

boost also adds heat to motor, also more fuel adds heat, if egt's can be kept down more power can be made by been able to add more boost, or do u know of some good info for me to read. from what i have seen n read most failures r coursed by heat issues

You're right about heat causing problems.

But the air doesn't cause the heat, the fuel does. EGTs are pushed up by fuel, not air. Lean in a diesel means cool - opposite to petrol.

Extra boost (up to a point) combined with a modest amount of extra fuel can actually cool things down, by pushing more cool air through the engine, particularly when both valves are open (overlap) and combustion isn't happening.

Without being brand/model/boost PSI specific, it is quite possible to up boost, tune accordingly, get worthwhile power gains, maintain or lower standard EGTs, and decrease fuel consumption.

As has been said elsewhere, extra power and torque, particularly if used, will increase stress and wear, although it's hard to accurately say how because of the variables. This is a separate issue from the effects of boost.

Another issue that only each owner can decide on, is whether or not the benefits are worth the stuffing around. They will be for some and not for others.

Sideshow_Bob, Are you planning to do all this to your engine? Or are you building a new one to accept a turbo? You maybe over thinking your setup, What are you planning on doing?

so if not abused, egt's r monitored, and good tune running around 12psi boost should be pretty reliable

2.8 3L power mods

Love to see that engine pushing that amount ponies out if it! Most dyno reports I have seen on a 2.8 have been around 80hp but over 500lb-ft. Maybe try finding a 1kz-te motor? Or a supercharged v6 commy engine.

Maybe at the crank, but definitely not at the wheels.
