Anyone done a V6 conversion, killed my 22R

Postby dazza96 on Wed, 18 Dec 2013 4:56 +0000

Hey guys today while driving my piston shot through the sump and now deciding whether to put another 22r in or v6 commy just curious if anyone on here has done a commodore v6 conversion on there hilux? pros and cons im guessing some cons would be fuel, 6 cylinder rego, mod plates, adapter plate costs 1 grand let alone the engine you can pick up for around $500

so has anyone done it? what are some pros about it? i have also heard a few people have lots of problems after its been installed

ether that or i put another 22R in,

Thanks

There are plenty of 1GR-FE V6's around at wreckers - including the ECU and Auto or Gear Box

Get serious, get a LS2 or 2JZ

2jz is to long with out alot of stuffing around and expensive.

ls1/2/3 on gas would be the go.

You can get kits to match up your trans or retain the auto off the ls1.

depends how much money you want to put into it. Any conversion will cost over 4-5g in parts. Its the small stuff that gets you.

Unless you have something very special, I would just replace the motor with the 22r.

Pros, Tons and Tons of power. You will have spare.

How bad is the block? If there is damage to the bore you could always increase the size. Much easier to do a rebuild.

beyond rebuild for me, the number 1 piston is hanging out of the sump, and im guessing that would mean the crank shaft has snapped not worth it when a re build kit is 750 not including crank shaft or bearings i could buy another 22R for 1500 and installed

I might get flamed for this but...
If you've never owned a heavily modified car before be very wary. The cost just goes stupid without even knowing it. You double the power next thing you'll want a different gearbox. Then you'll break something else. And the power steering will be a hassle. And the wiring. And the fuel system. It just goes on and on. If you want a powerful 4wd just go buy a v6 sr. Or if you love the old hilux, just replace the 22r and put a mild cam and an exhaust on it and enjoy the hell out of it.
I'm not telling you what to do. But you asked for advice. And that's my 2 c.

I would be buying another 22R then.

More options here:

http://www.lceperformance.com/Engines-L ... -s/142.htm

Loads of Youtube videos ou there with with worked 22R's at full noise as well... 8-)

mattwhite speaks the truth... I'd forget a conversion on such an old truck.
Either stay with what you have and work with the stock motor format, or upgrade the vehicle.
Good luck with it.

Cheers,
Matt

Yep great advice from Matt and Matt :D

You could end up spending an enormous amount of money on a conversion to make it unreliable.

If you want more power I think the rebuilt engines Matt has provided above are great.

Otherwise maybe get a working 22r out of a wrecked Hilux and sell yours and upgrade.

But I do like the Turbo 22R-TE that was sold in the USA and Jap spec Hilux

Thanks for the replys but..

It turns out you save a few g by doing a v6 conversion, we can eaisly go to the wreckers and by a 22R engine that they ''claim'' has been rebuilt but you know what the wreckers are like, plus they want $1500 for a engine plus you have to give them your old engine, or i could go and buy a new proper fresh rebuilt 22R for $3500.

Or buy a V6 fresh rebuild and proper rebuild for $450, plus the bell housing adaptor $1000 so total costs

bell housing adaptor $1000
motor $450
mod plate $100+
commodore clutch $280
all other adaptors for trottle and electrics 100 +

TOTAL $1930

or like some of you guys have said buy another 22R $3000, not buying from the wreckers as they are sneaky bastards and have had many problems before, the motor that just blew up my 22R came from the wreckers and they Claimed it was rebuilt 4 8 months ago,

Each to their own :)

3500 to rebuild a 22r (about right) or 450 for a v6? How'd you compare those two? Ecotec stopped 10 years ago. No offence man but the hidden costs in that conversion would blow your mind. You've got no exhaust there to start with. Or engine mounts. And you need to put an electric pump down the back and replace your fuel hoses.

Just a thought what about the RV6 4 runner driveline. It won't have anywhere near the poke of the dunny door V6 but should squize in easier and will come with a transfer box too
