1kz-te boost/fuel cut out

Hi guys
This one is for older hilux owners or those former owners who have since given in to the common rail ;)
I have a 04 lux with the 1kzte after owning 2011 TD wrangler (460nm) needless to say I'm trying to squeeze a few more needed ponies out of my new girl. I recently fitted a manual boost controller just to tweak it up a lil (really can't help fooling with stuff) it's currently maxing out at 15 psi no probs except the dreaded fuel cut which kicks in around the 14.5-14.7 psi mark. Anyone out there discovered/seen a way around this. My thoughts were to fit an adjustable resistor inline of the signal wire from the boost pressure sensor to the ECM......has anyone done this?
Sorry for the small novel.

I was told there is a "diode" (??) that goes on the boost sensor. It tricks the ECU as you said. I assume you have a boost gauge? I have one on the way myself along with a boost controller, but not thrilled about mounting it on the steering column.

I also have a Hilux SR5 with the 1KZ-TE

I am no expert though!

Wish I had more information for you.

any type of "fuel cut defender" or "voltage clamp" will work. you just need to wire it into the map sensor and it limits what the map sensor reads.

So say 14.7psi is the fuel cut mark, your map sensor would read....lets say 3.5volts. anything over that would mean fuel cut. so what the FCD does is that it will limit the map sensor from seeing anything over 3.5volts or whatever you set it at.

Currently I have mine running 17psi, tuning the FCD will be dependent on what one you have.

Thanks kAm... thats what it's called... an FCD! Tubosmart makes a pneumatic one that goes on before the MAP sensor.

DO you have an electronic or manual FCD?

Electronic. from memory 3 wires, 2 that intercepts one of the wires on the map sensor (one in one out) and other is power feed.

Thanks kAm
I knew there would be something on the market, finding what it's called or where to find one was another story!
Csale, love what you have done with your lux. I do have a guage, I also bought off eBay a guage pod, which mounts to the drivers side A pillar, I only think they house a 52mm guage, don't make the mistake I did and buy the guage first only to find it didn't fit

Hey kAm, what brand of FCD do you have? The electronic ones aren't necessarily generic and are for certain makes and models

Got mine from "Chip It" in Balcatta. dont think they're still around in balcatta. you can probably get away with a jaycar kit or get a typical HKS one. you just need to find one that works within the voltage range of the map sensor

Fitting a chip that controls or clamps a voltage signal will work, then use it to adjust fuel. The unichip works well on these.

you'll also find that you wont get much power by just boosting the motor. its rather opposite of a petrol motor. adding more air will just basically give you cooler EGT's. you need to add more fuel in and balance it.
a bit of background on my setup,
late model 1kz-te
EGR blocked,
Chip It module on max setting,
Chip It Fuel Cut Defender on setting 9
GFB manual boost controller set for 1.2bar (17PSI)
3inch turbo back exhaust (manta)
runs well on 305/75/16 with 11.5 litres to 100km's which is a mix of highway and city driving. used to be around the same or a tad more when it was stock but without the extra power!

a similar setup to that will give you a decent kick if you're after decent power.

The power increase noticed by adding only 5 psi was quite noticeable, it's just the boost cut which is putting a wet blanket on everything just as the motor feels like it's reaching full potential. I have blanked the EGR and have a 3" exhaust on route from Perth. I realize I'll have to meet the extra boost with equivalent fuel, however I really can't justify the big bucks for a chip that only adds fuel delivery, when for the same dollars our friends with late model luxs are gaining benefits all round :?:
So is it safe to assume that any FCD that works between the 0.5-5 v will work??

Thank you Zax.
I like where this thread is going folks..... I wanna see some build threads. The egr block looks like a quick next mod for me to do.

yeah 0.5-5.5 im pretty sure is the range on the sensor.

the diesel motors are different to petrol motors, adding more air will just make it run a bit more efficient and also give a bit more power. pretty much its the opposite of a petrol motor, you add more fuel, you need more air to keep up with it.

you might want to invest in an intercooler too. early model prado's fit near spot on. you'll have to spin the airbox lid slightly and combine the hilux tps and prado tps to make one unit. other then that all brackets bold up.
perfect fit for a body lift. hacking of the bonnet is required for no body lift.

Thanks kAm, I have just bought a turbosmart FCD 2 module off eBay, was pretty cheap really. As for intercooler, we'll yes this is in my sights for the next project, just looking out for the right donor! A 05 lux intercooler will fit too, just need to make sure it's a pre water cooled EGR. Map sensor needs to be moved as well. Have been looking out for an early lux with a late lux bonnet scoop to see what it looks like, reckon it might look trick!
My staino 3" arrived today!! Did you fit yours kAm? What a r$&t to get the dip pipe off!

nah i got lazy and let the exhaust shop deal with it. was $1050 supplied and installed, couldn't complain about that.

look into the early prado intercooler, i think the 90 series, not the 120series. it literally bolts on. no need to modify hoses or get extra bends, the turbo outlet bolts to the cooler, then cooler bolts to the TPS which bolts to the manifold. no messing around! you just need the right bits.

I ended up with i think a colorado scoop, only because it was basically the same colour.

Yeah I think letting the exhaust shop with a hoist would have been the go, a lot more hassle than the D4D I know that much. I'll look into the prado ic, one coming off the same engine makes sense. I like the scoop it actually looks factory!

Fella's I just upped my boost to 15psi and its genius with the Tunit!

I may get a FCD and move up to 16 or 17 psi later on now, but that should wait till after an exhaust.

Thanks for all the info.

kicks a lot harder on 17psi :P
fyi the "chip it" fuel cut defender is actually a HKS unit. opened mine up to inspect and it says HKS made in japan.

also you splice it on the middle cable out of the 3 cables on the map sensor.
you'll have red and black for power and ground.
yellow and white is spliced into the middle map sensor cable.

I'd also highly suggest getting a Auber EGT gauge to monitor EGT's and set warning alarms. I've set my gauge to cut out the chip and turn an alarm bell on when EGT's reach anything over 500degrees Celsius

I got the Auber EGT and Boost Gauge...

I must say the turbo at 15 psi certainly has a different howl to it.... is the new howl anything to be wary of?
