Turbo leaking oil

G'day peoples. First post on here, looks like a great site.

So my Hilux is about to cost me a large sum of money. The injectors are shot and the turbo is leaking oil. Not to mention the whining rear diff. I've already purchased new injectors and will install them in the next few days. My mechanic told me I have to replace the turbo, as you can't just change the seals/gaskets.

I gave it a pressure clean today, then took it for a drive to see where the oil was leaking from (after removing the intercooler cover). It seems to be coming out below the round pump/diaphragm looking thing next to the intercooler. There is a hole in the manifold below, this is where the oil is coming out of.

Has anyone got any idea what the cause is and if I can fix it without purchasing a new turbo? Cheers in advance for any replies or advice.

Yes you can reseal the unit. Not a problem. It has only got form in place gasket there orange in colour.

Now actually this is interesting to me as I also have an annoying small leak from around there,
it appears to be spit out quite small amounts that then get blown back all over the passenger side of the engine compartment by the fan.

Is there any more detail on the repair or perhaps pictures that'd be great

Repair is quite time consuming and you have to mark the hosings so the go back into the correct positions. Most people remove the turbo to reseal it. But it can be done on the ute. Saving u a shit load of gaskets.
Use black fypg form in place gasket. It has orange there at the moment. The housing is only held on by 6, 8mm bolts.
You have to remove almost everything on the right hand side of the motor and then the fun begins.

Well, I changed out the injectors this morning and the turbo hoses had a heap of oil in them. Where exactly does the oil get in? I just need to work out whether to change out the turbo or fix it myself?

There will always be oil in the because of the tappet cover breather. Even if you fit a catch can you will still get a little oil vaper in there.

I thought you said it was leaking out of the housing. If it is wet inside with oil that is normal.

Yeah, it is leaking out of the hole I described in the original post and spraying all over the passenger side of the engine bay. What does that take to repair? Apparently you can't post attachments in this section, so I can't put a pic up. Your replies are most appreciated by the way!

Another question- can the sump be removed without lifting the engine? I want to clean the oil pickup.

The sump can be removed in ute but it is quiet involved. You can clean the oil pick up through the oil drain hole with a good kero blaster and then some cheap oil to flush it all out. Might cost a little for the cheap oil but a LOT quicker and works a treat.

2nd if the oil is leaking from the Aloy compressor housing through the orange form in place gasket. It can be resealed.

Cheers mate, I put two bottles of oil flush through it with new oil after I did the injectors, then drained and replaced oil and oil filter. From what I could see through the drain hole, the pickup looked a bit blocked, but I could still see the gauze and it was nothing like the pic I have seen with the pickup clogged up with about 2-3mm of gunk. Saying that, I could only see about a cm2 through the drain hole. Still not sure what to do, maybe unload it while I can. Not sure what you mean about the compressor gasket, I might have to search around the net. Is it an easy job to reseal?

That is your egr valve and wow. Send in for warranty man. That's a good one.

Like I sad the intake system will always have oil through it. For it to be leaking there there has to be a crack or a hole in the egr valve.

Not sure about warranty. The cars seven years old with 220,000 on it and I'm not the original owner.

It looks like you might be needing a new egr valve assembly
Best look for a 2nd had one as they are very expensive.

With the new injectors in I am noticing a lack of power when you put your foot down. Not werse than before the change, but no better I think. It's as if the turbo is doing nothing. I found a thread on here related to blocked egrs and intakes.

Could this be my problem? I don't think it will solve the oil leak problem, but could be the cause of power loss?
