04 1kzte overheating

Postby kam2000 on Mon, 02 Sep 2013 5:42 +0000

Hi, i've got an 04 model hilux and everytime the vehicle is under acceleration the temperature rises quickly, if going uphill will hit the red zone on the temp gauge, as soon as i'm over the hill and back to cruise speed it suddenly drops back to normal. Some days its fine, done a 600klm round trip to go get a boat, towed it back home with not one problem at all, but just the other day I had a bit of rubbish to unload, drove about 8klms to the tip, and it overheated and I had to pull over. Any ideas of what this problem could be? The radiator has been flushed, replaced coolant, replaced hoses, replaced radiator cap with a new genuine one, any help would be appreciated.

Can't say for sure what your problem is, but that engine is known to crack the pre combustion chambers and the head behind it. Can't be repaired. New head.
Warm the engine up. CAREFULLY remove the radiator cap. Start the engine and check for bubbles in the radiator.

Thanks for the responses. Changed thermostat to try eliminate problems one by one (as wife told me to before spending big ie. head), took it for a drive about 30klms, didn't overheat, but when I pulled up and popped the bonnet I pushed down on the cap then suddenly she started gurgling and water went into the overflow bottle, any ideas, or you's still reckon cracked head??

As andy said do the gas check, or it could be as simple as wrong coolant, or not enough coolant, also a pressure test will find holes or cracks in the system where coolant may be leaking but isnt noticable, it may even be your water pump isnt working properly and isnt forcing water through the jackets.

Do this check ^^^ If the head is cracked, which is very likely, you can replace everything else and it won't fix the problem. Cost nothing to do the above check.

Maybe check the radiator is not full of dust and bugs by blowing it out with a air compressor or water if it is stuck on hard I
I have noticed it doesnt take much of a blockage to raise the temp if this is the case someties will help a lot. If not blocked try changing down a gear and get the revs up which will spin the fan quicker and should drop your temp. Good luck hopefully it is a easy fix

My 2003 turbo diesel is running a bit hot at the moment. My mechanic is going to flush the radiator out and do a few other checks next week. Recently though, he took it for a run and brought it back to the shop to make sure the fan clutch was working properly and not slipping. Maybe you could look at this, too.

Radiator is going to be blocked inside. Bypass the mechanic and take it to a reputable radiator shop. Natrad or Adrad are the ones to see.
Flush won't remove blockage. A radiator that's 85% blocked still flows water just fine when flushed.
Coolant does not make one ounce of difference. Could be full of piss and still cool if the rad is free of blockage.
Get them to test the cap on your radiator. Just because the cap is new doesn't mean that it seals 100% on YOUR radiator.
There are so many ways to test the cooling system operation that my fingers would hurt from typing them.
Take it to an expert.
Most mechanics would know which way the water even flows inside the cooling system.
