Oil leaking from intercooler pipe

Postby dandan on Thu, 08 Aug 2013 3:31 +0000

Hi,

I recently had some valve shims replaced and I have some oil leaking from the large rubber hose that connects to the intercooler. You can see in the photos it has sprayed out a little at the top of the hose and it is also dripping at the bottom side of the hose and oil is running along the silver part (sorry don't know what it is) with the blue/white label/barcode and down the pipe towards the front of the engine. I have only done about 400km since the work was done. I have tightened up the hose clamp and I think that should stop the oil leaking.

But my real question is should there be that much oil in there? So the top end would have all been taken off and I have only done approx 400km and there is easily 6-10ml (if not more) of oil that has come out. Is this normal... if not what does this mean!?

Thanks guys

A little oil goes along way. All intercoolers ive pulled of a lux have had fair amount of oil in them. I beleive it comes from the turbo leakage. Some one feel free to correct me. If you pull the hose off wipe the pipe and hose clean and refit it should be right after that.

Blow by through the PCV into the intake is the cause, you can fix it by fitting a catch can. About the leak, most likely it was loose clamp.

Thanks guys. Turns out the leak is actually coming from the intercooler itself but was hard to diagnose because the oil kept getting blown under and over to the rubber hose. Its coming from the seal where the black plastic section of the intercooler is crimped on to the aluminium intercooler body. Taking it in for repair next week.... found a radiator specialist who will dissasemble, custom make a new o-ring and re-crimp/assemble as you can't get this seal/o-ring from toyota.

I have noticed mine is leaking from the same spot, between the plastic section and where it's crimped together with the intercooler radiator. Booked in to see the dealer on Tuesday. It looks like there is oil leaking from the tapet cover on the exhaust side too. I'm a bit pis##d about it only have 25 thou on the clock and it's leaking oil.....

I'd say yours should be covered by warranty then? Mine has 160k on the clock and out of warranty. Repair has been done and so far so good.... much cheaper than a new intercooler!

Have you fitted an aftermarket exhaust? Thats what caused mine to go (and prob a combination of old age)... the extra boost from the 3" exhaust i fitted, apparently it is very common.

hey dandan, I think I have the same problem. I brought a 3 inch exhaust and put it on since doing it seems like the car has been a bit sluggish, mine has done 193k. I have a little oil spraying up the intercooler pipe right next to the turbo with the rubber boot with the hose clamps attached.

I heard though when fitting after market exhaust you should get it tuned ( Chipped ), I was planning on getting the boost and tune done at the same time, I havnt got any other leaks like the ones you guys are getting

But im not 100% sure if it was the exhaust at the time that done it, cos one of the turbo bolts stripped so the only way I could get it off was to remove the turbo so I could remove the dump pipe, I started unconnecting wires and intercooler, and unplugging the turbo. but my brother inlaw decided to instead get the ark welder and weld a socket to it worked a treat got it out, so I put everything back and fitted new exhaust just seems a bit harsh to drive some times.

Hey.toyota tell me my intercooler leaks as well.took off the shroud but couldnt find any excess oil between plastic and aluminium. Do i have to disassemble the intercooler or should the leak be obvious?

Often there is oil leaking from between the intercooler inlet pipe where it bolts to the main body.
Change the gasket?
Don't worry about the tiny bit of oil it's fine, just messy if its leaking.
It may look like more in areas where it accumulates over time, but it's bugger all usually.

If it had a big leak you may get a whistle.

Or ask them "please show me where it's leaking" they might be saying yep yep....... ;)
