loss of engine oil, large amounts of soot from exhaust

Postby A,Sharwood on Fri, 31 May 2013 3:33 +0000

hi all
i need your help on an issue, i have an 05 hilux that now has almost 200000 on the clock and i only drive it every second weekend or so and on holidays, since the start of march ive noticed it using a little bit of oil, roughly 1 litre per 10000klms, also just this week i have noticed large amounts of carbon being put out of exhaust on revving at stand still, no smoke comes through exhaust, either at idle, driving or revving,
any ideas?

thanks
adam

The oil I wouldn't worry about. It's not great but it's ok. When you say soot you meen like chunks or dry chips sort of thing? Or black on your tail gate?

sorry had to ask because youve posted it in the pre 05 section...
the 3 inch exhaust probably wont help if its got a high flow muffler and diesel cat. they all burn a bit of oil so wouldnt be too worried. and its a diesel, blowing smoke is what they do. we need an indication of how much smoke.

Does it run ok? Have you injectors replaced, checked? Sounds like diesel not getting burnt properly. It would take a lot more than 1L per 10k of oil to leave a trace out the back IMO.

Mine does it as well. Dec 05 Diesel, with 300,000km on the clock. Pumps out a bit of black powder on the drive way on start up. I know my injector/injector seals are kaput as on start up it pumps out plumes of white/grey smoke and misses for about 5 seconds (sinks of oil), then blue smoke on acceleration as I drive away for about 30-40 seconds then runs pretty clean after that. I'm hoping the black powder is just unburnt (semi burnt) fuel and a new set of injectors will fix all my woes.... :?
Cheers Rod

Mattwhite, it runs perfectly, no smoke, no miss it is smooth as it was new, I haven't done anything towards injectors as I was sure it wouldn't perform if it was them,
Rod that black powder is the same effect, but I have no smoke or rough idle, or smell, runs as new
Cheers

Yeah ok. Still sounds like unburnt fuel but. Again, I think your oil consumption is normal for its age.
A little clause I'll ad, I think should go with every post. Im 1000's of Km's away going by your posts. I'm just trying to help but maybe take it to your normal mechanic.
