Limp mode engine light after 180,000km

Postby jrizzle on Thu, 19 Jul 2012 6:18 +0000

Hey guys I've got a 05 with the 3.0 d4 with dp chip 3 inch exhaust snorkle ect. Anyways she has got some km up on her now 180,000 and the engine light has come on and gone into limp mode 3 times now over the last 2 weeks. I've taken it to the mechanic and the scanner reads (fuel) I fill up t the same mainstream caltrx every week and doubt it's got anything to do with diesel. I think it's wierd that it has just started happening as I have had all mods for 50,000 km or so. Any ideas guys would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers regards josh

Not accompanied by the fuel warning light? That would rule out the filter wouldn't it? Good work toyota on a nicely descriptive error! Under what conditions does it happen? When cold / startup? Accelerating hard?

Whats the 'exact' code that is coming up ?

'fuel' is not a description of any of the std ecm error codes.

Take it into a Toyota dealer so they can tell exactly what's causing the limp home mode to come on. They should be able to tell you more than "fuel". Mechanics scanners are simpler than the dealers and can't get all the info. Mine did a similar thing; went into limp home mode with the engine warning light coming on. When Toyota read the error code they could see that one injector was dumping too much fuel into the piston. Got the injector replaced and it's all running fine.
There is no such thing as a stupid question.

Yeah great I'll see what Toyota has to say. Have been dreading taking it there but seems to be more accurate. Yes it's random hot cold, has happen both times after approx 1 hour of highway driving. The local mechanic did day he thought it was the injector pump. I have heard they are expensive did you get yours from a wreckers? Or genuine new? Thanks guys

Could be something to do with the dp chip??? Or the mechanic was thinking maybe a cracked head! Hope not this bill is getting worse. Hope there is some light at the end of this hell hole. Any ideas much appreciated
