Service Intervals

Postby Skrewdriver on Wed, 02 May 2012 6:34 +0000

I own a 2012 build SR5 Hilux, 3.0L TD and my question is would it be a good idea, or preventative maintenance, do to my own oil change every 5000km in between the handbook 10,000km service intervals???

It has the Service Advantage fixed price servicing until 60,000km

Any thoughts?

I change the oil and filter every 5k in my D4D. If i had a petrol, i would do it every 10k.
Diesel is a dirty fuel which fouls up the oil quicker than in a petrol.

I just figure its cheap insurance and will look after the engine in the long run,

Once you do it a few times, you get the hang of it and it doesnt take more than an hour

I would have thought if there was any benefit to doing an oil & filter change at 5000km. Toyota would be all over it. I mean that would double the maintenance $$ for them. So why would they recommend 10k?

My dealer told me "you can over service it if you like", but toyota reomend 10000km intervals. I still am considering 5000km though.

Thanks for your advice, I guess I am being over cautious. The AU Falcon I owned was 15k intervals, bad move. When the engine got up to 300k, it was stuffed. I figure for a little bit of extra cash, I can make the diesel last a lot longer than 300k

My mechanic looks after a lot of 4bys and small business fleets of various makes and models and I said the same to him.
His response was "Try marketing a commercial vehicle to a company bean counter telling him that you have to take every vehicle in your fleet out of service every 5000k and see how many vehicles you sell. Most fleet vehicles and turned over by the time they are 3 years old or 100k so they are not worried about longevity and they will last well past any dealer warranty period regardless so it is not all about what is the best for your motor.

Berrima Diesel said the similar thing to me saying it is a bit like mopping your floor with dirty water, the cleaner your water ( oil) the better it works!

x3 + check oil pick up screen + clean air FILTER (uni filter),check all fluids, drive belt, uni's, I also change Diesel filter, clean out filter bowl every 10k. mines got 192ks on it and want to get 500ks out of it,then buy another one.
The higher service intervals also allow your cars mechanicals to wear out quicker so you buy a new one sooner.

I would be interested in getting stats around this... I'm not a mechanic. And don't claim to know any more than the next bloke. The problem with asking a mechanic is he's the guy you'll be buying the oil and filter from. If not the service itself. So he's got a vested interest in you doing extra servicing.

Run a poll? 5, 10, 15 k? and mention any engine problems? would be good to correlate the relationship b/w service intervals & engine wear. Although i think a big factor which would be hard to measure would be conditions and how you treat her. (i.e a rig working in the mines being thrashed as a company car has a much harder life than say the bloke who babies it and gives it the once over with mothers wax every second weekend)

I used to do mine every 10k, I'm doing it every 5k now which coincides with my tyre rotations. This way I don't forget! I do oil, oil filter, fuel filter and clean the air cleaner (uni filter) every 5k. It's a bugger because it comes around too quick for me sometimes

Those who do the 5000km oil change. What evidence do you base your decision on? eg. what proof do you have that the 5000kkm oil change makes any difference?

In Bulgaria, and I think generally Europe, Toyota recommends 15k km oil change. However, after reading this thread, I really consider switching to 5k intervals.

Can anyone say what else should be changed in when you get about 100k km for a 2.5 diesel? I have lost my service book, can't stand the local Toyota dealer, and don't trust local mechanics (somebody mentioned vested interest).

You reckon? It's easy as buggery to do while you're servicing and they're $20 so I figure why not. You'd be surprised at the amount of shit it can pick up in 5k, particularly if you get a bad tank of diesel somewhere out in the scrub.
