5l to 1KD 3.0T

Postby big-div on Thu, 15 Mar 2012 10:27 +0000

Hi All,

My 5L has developed a loud ticking sound from the bottom of the engine, also a heap of blue smoke !

So i've found a wreck Surf with the 1kd turbo 3.0l in it, i was just wondering if its 1( worth repairing the 5l or 2( will the 1kd fit with no so many issues ?

Cheers,

Aaron

if its out of a surf its a 1kz engine, will fit without to many problems as this motor was fitted to your model from the factory, may have to change a few things, thou you will have to do some wiring as the 1kz is ecu controlled, your 5l may also be ecu controlled depending on year model

Cool ok, so pretty much its just the ecu that will be the problem? Is there anything else that will need to be swapped?

there is regualtions (in QLD anyway) that you cannot put an older motor in a newer chassis. therefor you would need to buy a new model 1kd out of the 99-04 models assuming yours is about that

Yeah i don't think we've got that rule here in SA. Not that i care anyway... What cop is going to look at a stock hilux ?? lol So if i got this motor, it could be put in with buying nothing else special ?

Does the 5L gearbox bolt onto the 1kz engine ? Or are they different ?

I believe the 1kz transplant would be relitively simple. Especially if you get a wrecked or front cut which includes the bigger gearbox etc. i raised a simular question a little while ago, and might be looking into something simular in the future

You will have to upgrade gearbox to a r series and either maechanical pump or re wire the motor for the 1kz ecu, also engine mounts need moving forward 50mm or so, if it is a 1kd out of a late model surf then Im unsure

hey guys,

how did this transplant end up going?? this is pretty much what I'm looking at doing soon, i have a 99 LN167 lux, and am tossing up either putting a turbo on it or upgrading to a newer motor like the 1kz, but not to sure which way to go…. any advise would be great.
Thanks.

If your looking for power of the new hilux don't do it. If you just want a little bit more and you come across a complete wreck then it is fairly simple. Except the engine mounts may be different. Just measure the difference from a common reference point

I would check your injectors before considering that engine toast. A bad injector on those engines will sound a lot like a connecting rod knock to the untrained ear. Simply replacing the injectors will solve your problem.

Ye, x2. Just go exchange. The 1KZs came after the 5L series, as well. The QLD thing. The KDs replaced the 1KZs.
The Roo.
