3L to 5L conversion advice/help?

Postby Syko Pyro on Mon, 07 Nov 2011 3:07 +0000

Hi,

I own a 1995 model 2.8 Litre (3L) 'lux and am looking to put a 3.0 Litre turbo diesel engine in it's place. I have done a lot of work to the suspension (tough dog 2" lift) sound system (alpine 6" splits/coaxials 10" R type sub) among other things, and am looking for a bit of a performance upgrade. I don't want to buy a new car because that means I will have to do ll of that again. I have put extractors and a new exhaust system on but I still want a bit more out of the good ol' 'lux. I asked a few mechanics about turboing it and they all said that it was a bad idea, unless I wanted to strengthen the bottom end. Yeah na. So I was just looking for some advice on where to aquire a 3.0 Turbo Diesel engine (non efi). What is required in replacing the engine thats not the same as every other engine replacement. (ie I realise what has to happen to replace the engine, but I want to know if I remove the 3L engine and source a 5L engine, is the air conditioning compressor going to be in a retarded spot, or will the old one bolt straight on the the 5L engine).

Thanks for your time.

Just drop either a Holden v6 or v6 supercharged, as there cheap as and stock driveline can handle the power, or look at either the 5ltr injected Holden or new crate 6.2ltr

The v6 is the cheapest option as it cost you around 1500 for kit and 1-3G for motor and box(4spd auto)
The 5l is the same 1500 for kit but 2-6g for motor and box (4spd auto)
The beats is the 6.2(317kw) crate motor and box(6spd man) new are around 10-12g + computer and the conversion that's the hard bit but very doable
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

Hi john253a,

Thanks for your feedback. It's very much appreciated. I was, however, hoping to stick to a diesel engine and manual transmission. I will definately look into your suggestions some more.

Thanks again,

Hi all,

So I did some researching and the Toyota 5L engine (3.0 Litre Diesel) will fit in any chassis that has another Toyota L series engine mounted in it. The only difference is the bore and head, everything else is the same.

Another Question:
Anyone know about a supercharger for Toyota's 5L engine (3.0 Litre diesel)? Or anything that could be made to fit?

Thanks,

Turbo is the easiest and cheapest, to source , the only expensive part is getting the exhaust manifold to suit the turbo,
Superchargers are easier to install, require the same amount of plumbing(if sidemount) but more $$$ to buy

It all comes down to what you want to achive, wether you use, single turbo, Sequential turbo, twin turbo, topmount supercharger or sidemount supercharger

iv done this conversion before, the 5l will bolt straight up to the gear box and engine mounts. you will need to use your old air-conditioning brackets and power steer pump brackets and idler pulleys, basically just bolt all the 3l accessories to the 5l engine. i have turbo'd both the 2.8 and 3 litre and intercooled them both. in my experience i found i got more power out of the 2.8.

Thanks for your replies,

I was talking to a few mechanics and they mentioned that due to the age of my engine, and the build, if I was to turbo it I would more than likely break the bottom end. Also, I have just purchased extractors for it (rather expensive) so I wasnted a supercharger so that I could keep them.

John253a, I think that more than likely I would get a sidemount supercharger, but I'll take whatever I can get.

Thanks mor78 for your experience, that's the answer I've been looking for for a while.

Thanks again,
