Potential problems??

Postby pheonix on Tue, 13 Sep 2011 5:13 +0000

G'day everyone
My first post and I am looking for potential problems with the KZN165R turbo diesel engines...
...a little about my back ground so you know where im coming from. I as yet do not own a Hilux..I currently own a 3ltr TDI Patrol ( please dont flame me :D ) I have been through a long and expensive learning curve after the patrol dropped a piston shortly after purchase. I didnt do my homework and suffered the consequences.

Now im asking you if there are pitfalls with the Hilux 3l TD that i should know about, before i commit to another possible can of worms. The vehicle im looking at buying has nearly 300k's on the clock. Its an 04 manual. I see you guys are also blocking your EGR..do you also catch can the crankcase return? What about your turbos, does the boost need limiting also like the nissans do?
Sorry for requesting so much info straight up  I will continue to use the search function as i patiently wait for any helpful replies.
Cheers in advance ;)

Potential problems??

I purchased an 05 petrol, fairly hi fuel consumption but a great vehicle. Tried to sell it to buy a new 2010 diesel and had about 10 enquiries but no one here in the county wanted a petrol version. Finished off trading it in. I recon I dropped about 10 grand not being a diesel.

Potential problems??

Good day man. One of the main reasons I bought my lux was because of the legendary D4D. I have 201,000 km and still rolling strong. No mods ever done to the engine.... Yet......

I see you are buying an 2004 TD is that correct if so as I understand it, they do not have the D4D common rail injection. I believe they are pretty good motor, but with 300K on the clock you could have a can of worms.

Sorry I could not be more specific

Potential problems??

Helmut,
Right on I suppose I should have read better.
I have still heard with proper maintenance these drive trains should go well over 500k. But he is right second hand you never know how the prev owner treated it. I would steer clear of anything over 150k unless you trust the owner or really like to work on your truck.

Before this truck I had an 02 td dualcab hilux, Bought it with 290k and traded it in with 350k... The only engine work I did was replace a gasket on an oil return line and changed the head ( due to someone overheating the big girl playin in the mud ;) ) other then that I replaced an idler arm and the rear diff seal.. All in all I had a great run outta the whole twelve months I had it. But it's like anything mate ya get ya lemons as u have with ya patrol
Cheers Kirk

300 is nothing on them if they are looked after, they are nearly the same engine as the 2.8 just a little bigger. and the 2.8 would do over 600k easy and still be like new if serviced reg. it depends who has owned it like every car but 300 is ok. they are a good motor if looked after. prob have less issues than us with the new d4d.

My old man has a '91, I believe, diesel. Bought it in 2000 with over 200,000km on the clock. Kept up with the services and replaced a fuel pump. About 18 months ago had to rebuild the engine with the clock ticking over a neat 2.5million km. The '91 models, i think had the 3L engine. Might have been the 2L. 2.8litre.

(Note: my dad done absolutely zero performance mods to the vehicle. Apart from new suspension (added an inch extra lift over stock), his rig is stock as a rock).
The MudBug: 1999 LN167R, 3.0L 5L, N/A diesel
The "BushRanger": 2002 KZN165R, 3.0L 1KZ-TE, turbo diesel
