I thought I had a bad case of the rattles, filled up at Caltex with Vortex Diesel, quiet as anything! Couldn't believe the difference!

Hey Guys, I had a 2010 SR5 DC Auto D4D which I recently traded for a 2014 built car in the exact configuration. My new Hilux is definitely more rattly.... the injectors seem to be nosier.

I have read somewhere that with the new facelift they have used different injectors..is this true? if so is it good or bad? I like the new lux but I knew it was going to be this noisy I would have looked at the competition.

In winter, run some 2 stroke oil when refueling in the tank to quieten it down...

Try caltex premium diesel. Mine is best on that. Don't worry I took an auto 2014 colarado.for a drive the other day. Now that is a rattly engine. Also take it back to toyota and tell them you want and injector compensation test done to make sure they are in spec.

Injector cost / is it injectors?

Postby Bambi on Tue, 04 Apr 2017 3:08 +0000

Howdy folks,

First post other than my intro, so please be gentle. I've tried the search feature for a few days now and haven't been able to find what I'm after.

The lux has a terrible case of the death rattle. It's got about 100k kms on it, and it's ridiculously loud, especially when cold. Not blowing smoke or anything, but concerning nonetheless. Sometimes the rattle goes once it reaches operating temp, but sometimes it doesn't too. More recently it hasn't been going, it's not as loud when it's reached temperature, but it's there nonetheless. Is there anything else I should look at before getting the injectors replaced?

I just got back from my local Toyota and got a quote for about $3500 for all injectors, injector lines, rocker covers, fuel filter etc. Basically the whole package. Just wondering if this is a decent price (in comparison, as no price for injectors is decent).

They also tried to get me to replace the fuel (or injector?) pump, which would've brought the quote up to about $5600. No way I was keen on doing that.

Thanks in advance team.

This is where the problems lie.
The command pistons, the needle and the nozzle, the nozzle can carbon up, and the valve.
Now, the rattle can be as easy as you purchasing a batch of poor quality diesel fuel and this upsets the timing of combustion.
The other cause is wear in the above components other then that mentioned.

Thanks Roo,

So what's the fix? I'm up for new injectors? Seems from all the research I've been doing, nearly every lux sounds different haha. Without hearing it it's hard to describe.

It's very noticeable, usually under load or on cold start.
If you are not sure or even before you replace your injectors, get a diagnostic done.
The 150 models, you can install DLC injectors where the command pistons are coated where they wear most. Refer the image above, the black coating. Earlier models (Denso 7780, Toyota 23670-39316) you can't get this type of injector.

So since my last post, I've had all 4 injectors replaced including fuel lines and all that other jazz, plus I've pulled apart the EGR down to the manifold and given it a good scrub. I also fitted the EGR restrictor plate at this time.

The cold rattles are still there, loud as anything, and what I've noticed now is that even just coasting down the highway there's a constant rattle (albeit much quieter). I'm starting to wonder whether this is just normal for the D4D's, however those cold rattles are very noticeable and can't be normal.

2012 SR Extra Cab in case you're wondering.

Any other ideas to have a look at?

Some rattle is acceptable but might be worth having a look at your Suction Control Valve. There is plenty on SCVs and the testing of them here in the forum.
I might be wrong.

Hi from Malaysia,

1st post here and a new owner of a (Manufacturing date Nov 2011) 3.0 D4D. After hearing a whining noise from the left side of the Lux and reading on the net and a recent Australian youtube channel about the 'death rattle", is the injector failure imminent on every 3.0 Hilux? My engine is at 120,000km and AUD5600 is alot of dough!

Mam its not a hilux thing, every diesel will need an injector service a few times during its lifetime! Every fuel injected engine for that matter! Some just more than others. Look at it like changing your timing belt every 100k, injectors are no different as they are a serviceable item.

D4D death rattle.

Postby andy2285 on Sat, 10 Mar 2018 4:10 +0000

Hey all. My old hilux has started with what sounds like the death rattle. Not massively noticeable as of yet, but definitely had gotten more of a knock. Motor has 301xxx on the clock. I know what a rebuild it worth. Just want to know some more info on where exactly the knock comes from. Is it in the bore from wear? Did you have long before it let go altogether? I was told it by a mechanic it could go for a long time, but you never know i guess. Just chasing other peoples experiences.

Cheers
