Engine miss at low RPM - Added Techstream data

Postby Gracey on Wed, 04 May 2022 12:56 +0000

Hi all, ive been battling with an issue for 6 months now. Down low in the revs (1200rmp) I get an engine miss, the best way to describe it is like when a petrol engine has bad plugs or leads. Its tolerable without a load but with a van on its unpleasant to drive.

About 3 months ago I noticed the MAP sensor filter was cracked so it has been replaced.

Ive had a diesel place run a quick check and nothing showed on the scantool and boost is fine. He also cleaned the MAF sensor.

The best clue Ive had so far is I took a trip to NSW on the weekend and the place I stayed was over 1000m altitude. The issue was completely gone. Does this point to a faulty MAP sensor?

Im desperate to find the cause without spending thousands on mechanics just replacing things until they find the issue. Any suggestions would be awesome.

Cheers

Type: 2005 Hilux 3L Diesel - 215,000km

2005... is that the first of the 1kd?

If so, get someone with techstream or download it yourself. Boost is a small part of the story...
I might be wrong.

Thanks for the reply and yeah thats the one

Does techstream offer more than the standard scantool? I recall trying to get techstream working myself years ago and had a heap of trouble finding a cable that would work with my model. Something to do with a different protocol being used prior to 2006. I found a thread that youve actually replied in so hopefully you have some advise :D

Ill keep searching around on the forum. Maybe something like this?

Yes techstream does much more than a scan tool, it's what the Toyota dealers use.

Search the techstream thread, it covers almost all of the hardware/software issues.

So I done a bit of a test but I think I have too many sensors enabled, which meant there was so much data to process it only logged every 10 seconds or so. If you could recommend just whats required I might be able to get it to capture when the engine is actually missing.

Either way here's a link to 3 separate stages of the run https://imgur.com/a/Z0KZT6S

Another run today, is it normal for the target EGR to never be over 40%?

Weird you cant see the pics, ill have a go at embedding them, you just gotta click for full screen.

Target SCV is 1177, 1140 and 1523mA on various runs. Injector feedback is all perfect so I wont include those, all within +/- 1.

I cannot see actual SVC or EGR position values for some reason, only the target ones.

Sorry mate, still cant see the pics.

Have a look at the techstream thread and compare your values to the reference values on page 1 or 2 of the thread.

Time after DTC Cleared 3 min

What codes did it have?
What is your MAF reading at idle?
Is the engine standard? Chip?, Tune?

P0045 Turbo/Super Charger Boost Control Solenoid Circuit / Open. "current" and "history' were checked against the code.
Had a look around the forum and couldn't find anything conclusive. It hasn't thrown the code again since

Around 9gm/sec

Can you take another reading? The accelerator position/engine speed isnt at idle, its throwing the other values out.

At first look.. and its only a quick look, your SCV needs replacing.

Have a look at the reference values on this page: viewtopic.php?f=81&t=20228 it gives an excellent summary of what you would expect to see.

Thanks for your help mate. Ive taken another look through the thread and it doesn't list a reference value for the SCV current but based on other posts my voltage looks fairly close?

I know the SCV controls the fuel pressure and the reference value for the pressure in that thread is 30.000-40.000 kPag. Assuming that value is for all engine states and not just idle, my pressure is significantly higher.

Still strange that the issue didn't occur at altitude? Either way for $150-$200 I may as well replace the SCV and see how I go

Yeah it cant hurt to replace the SCV if its never been done. Just make sure its a genuine denso... there are a few fakes around on ebay. The longer SCVs are the updated versions and it should come with two alignment pins which are a bit useless but are a hint its a genuine denso unit. Dealers are your best bet for parts.

The SCV reference value is 30.000-40.000 kPag, with fluctuations of about 2000 kPa in either direction considered normal. Yours is fluctuating beyond 2000 kPa.
