Possible grenaded 1KD-FTV ?

Hi All,
my sons 2006 Hilux with the 1KD-FTV engine died with a rattle and white smoke coming out of the snorkle.
It was towed home and we're trying to do some diagnostics to work out what happended. We're 80% sure it's done the cracked piston routine, but we can't get the OBDT dongle that I use in my 2019 Prado to read the ECU for fault codes using Torque Pro. We've tested the dongle and Torque Pro setup in 3 other cars and it works fine, but the fact that we can't get it to read my sons Hilux ECU raises a red flag. So my question is, should I be able to check for fault codes in a 2006 1KD FTV Hiliux ?

Sorry to hear that mate, yep chances are its something fatal. Hopefully with smoke coming out of the snorkel its just a blown turbo... but might be worse.

You wont be able to connect to it with a standard scan tool as its a toyota specific OBD protocol (M-OBD or something). You need techstream or a snapon/autel/etc professional scan tools.

I have Techstream V13 which I use on my Prado, so we tried with Techstream on my sons 2006 Hilux and it came back with an error on the laptop screen which said "A communication error with Engine ECU occurred. Please confirm that Engine ECU is properly installed."
We tried on a friends 2010 Hilux with the !KD motor and Techstream worked fine.
If we're dealing with the Toyota specific MOBD protocol, is there a trick to getting it to play nice with Techstream ?
Or could we perhaps have an ECU with a problem ?

It worked fine on my 2005 after going through the usual setup selecting the vehicle. I dont know that and digital diagnostics are going to help with the symptoms you are reporting though.
