Exessive white smoke after offroading downhill

Postby xychix on Sat, 16 Oct 2021 1:38 +0000

Type: Hilux Vigo 2.5 2KD-FTV 2015. 150k KM.

I find my hilux to smoke like crazy after driving downhill for a while in Low Gear (with or without engine braking doesn't make te world of difference, however not using engine to break seems slightly better).

No heavy smoke while driving downhill. but guaranteed a few minutes after I get back on tarmac of just continue on another part that driving downhill (so the engine had to work again) I'll blow loads of white smoke, that bad that I was forces to drive at the end of the group as no one could stand driving behing me without coughing their lungs out.

Also after just a piece of random low gear driving it seems to blow more than normal white smoke as soon as I hit tarmac and drive away (regardless of the agressiveness of the driving)

Doesn't really seem to consume oil / water.

Any clues?
My first idea would be to have a feel at the turbo play and if that seems OK, have injectors tested (but that's an expensive move)

Injectors + seats
Get it looked at ASAP

I'll have to drive 1000km's back home at least but I'll put it on top of the list.

Made it home safely. Now in the middle of town where downhill low gear isn't an option.

Never showed any smoke since the last offroad KM's anymore. This is going to be hard do diagnose....

Any hints moving forward?
- do nothing till things get worse
- remove rocker cover to check for sooth?
- have the Catalytic converter checked (it might have been excessive regeneration? Unofortunately this converters are mantdatory here)
- just get the damn injectors tested?

.... :?:

First thing that I would do is to drop the oil from the motor and check the oil pickup screen through the sump drain hole. If all clear, then no major blowby past your injector seats. All :D :D :D :D :D .
Then hook up techstream and check the diagnostics on the motor for any issues with injectors etc.
Good luck, hope it turns out ok.

As Krat says - look at that pick up screen ASAP

Just interested in the theory behind your reasoning for it being injector seats, I know its a serious problem if they leak, but how does it create white smoke from the exhaust?

Agreed Martyn, I would think so too. Techstream may give some clues. Just remember we are talking about a Euro Vigo with all sorts of Euro/5 type of gear. I can't imagine dropping the engine oil will provide any further knowledge.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Good question MV. I have no idea why it blows white. Oil entering the top of the engine, blowby gases entering intercooler, turbo inlet, exhaust... I believe the answer may be buried deep in this thread... somewhere:

A lot of BS to wade through but at the risk of setting self up for more questions anything boxhead55 posted is reliable. Here is something the OP can do quickly:

Back to basics.
If there was enough blowby to create noticable smoke it would billow out the oil filler if removed.
Try the basic test of unscrewing the filler and leave it sit in position, give the engine a few revs and if too much blowby the cap will blow off.

UPDATE:
The same smoke appears after engine braking, going off the highway, dropping gears and do engine breaking. Once around the corner and back on the gas a decent puf of white grey smoke gets thrown out.

My hypothesis:
Off the gass (engine breaking) will make a vacuum in the chambers allowing bits of oil to be sucked in. Once back on the throttle that will burn off.

Under constant load no real smoke (as I'd expect with pissing injectors)

Nevertheless, another 800km drive home and next tuesday the injectors will come out and be tested and inspected. Keep u posted.
Will do a good oil flush straight after!

Already did diagnostics at the best specialist I could find. No codes, do diagnose to 'fuel issue' given the 150k on the clock testing the injectors seems a good next move.

It might be an injector that is bad and keeps dripping on engine braking? but also that should be pointed out with the planned steps *(injectors out and test)

At stationairy revs the cap is dancing quite a bit, as I have no reference to what is normal this is a hard indicator for me.

Do I understand correctly, that if I set the cap loose and rev the engine the cap should stay in place on a healthy engine?

Yes correct.

Also nothing will build up in your cylinders during low load operation, if you have a seat leaking bad enough to let oil in there will be a lot of compression leak and that cylinder will basically miss, can not happen if the engine still runs under load.

Is it fitted with a DPF? If so probably quite normal.

one step further.

The smoke was not DPF related, the temps there stayed low while smoking.

2 out of 4 injectors are leaking and other 2 also not up to spec.

Those will be replaced (read: kidney for sale)
I've also listed the request with the mechanic to source a endoscope and have a peek in the combustion chamber to ensure no big damage was done there.

Good to get those injectors and seats replaced
Did the mechanic specify what those injector feedback values were?

Now I'll have to get used to a slightly different sounding engine.

I'm supprised to find is idles cold at 750 rpm (like I'm used to) but idles up to 900 when warm (no electric devices / AirConditioning turned on and 6 degrees celcius outside). Also feels it sounds a bit rought where the turbo comes in.

Will get a few thousand km's on it to make a real judgement, don't want to go chasing ghosts.

They should have done a diagnostic first before replacing the injectors.
Get a proper diagnostic done and get the feedback values of the new injectors.
Shouldnt be idling that high when warm
Might be a good idea to get the diagnostic done from another workshop
You can always buy an ebay version of techstream. Easy to do yourself

I have a techstream cable (MINI-VCI J2534 Standards ODBII communication interface)), never got a windows install working though.
If anyone can PM me a link to a working version I'll be on it! (i'll give it one other go with an older techstream v13 and a Win7 x86 trial install)

They have done a readout (not sure with what software, potentially only read some fault codes and know they could read EG temps as the are trying to determine whether or not it was regeneration of the cat).
I wen't to about the only shop in the Netherlands I found should be able to do this

Certainly not a dealer, nor some shop around the corner. Unfortunately there's only a handfull of hilux and similar cars in the netherlands. Everyone here is driving small shopping carts.
