Hi all
I have a 2.5 2KD 2007 extra cab with the manual gearbox that I bought cheap, as a non runner.
I plan to build a reliable overlander / camper, to travel to South Africa from the UK.
I will be rebuilding the engine and am looking for reliable horsepower.
As a starting point- does the 3.0 1KD block and crank fit? And has anyone done it?

No, the bore and stroke are different

I think if you want to go that way, why not buy a second hand 1kd and fit that? There must be a few around now in wreckers. Otherwise it's not too expensive to buy a new crate engine from Toyota or a rebuild 1kd from a reconditioned outlet.

Ok it seems clarification in order... Do you have a 1kd block? If so I don't see why it won't fit in the vehicle. I'm not sure what you are asking. Are you wanting to know if you can rebore/stroke a 2kd block to make it a 1kd? As hiluxxury says, the bore and stroke are different between 1kd and 2kd. If you want the extra capacity you need a 1kd block, pistons and crank.

Asking if anyone has successfully done this>
I bought the extra cab as that is the configuration that I want to build an overlander but the extra cab does not come with a 3.0l option - only 2.5l
I could buy a whole engine, as this one needs a rebuild anyway but would be cheaper just to buy a 3.0l block and crank unless I can find a low mileage engine - which are scarce - so a used would need rebuilding anyway as I need it to be reliable - I don't want to break down in the middle of Africa!

Think past the mechanics of it.
Even by some long shot the blocks are interchangable prepare youself for an electrical nightmare.
Be easier to fit a Cummins R2.8, they come complete with ecm and harness, or just buy a car that is suited to your needs.

X2 what Martyn said, or the simple answer might be.... Rebuild the 2kd and be happy, it would not present as many headaches!

So is a 1KD not just a bored and stroked 2KD?

Probably not, and you would need to replace the ecu to match the 1kd engine specifications. As I said, there's a simpler way other than what you are proposing. One place you may get an answer as to the block is engine re-builders, they rebore/restroke engines all the time. I can see where you are coming from but it's not that simple, yes the 3.0 litre is just 125cc bigger per cylinder but there's more to it! In the good old days you could rebore/restroke a V8 engine from 5.0 litres to over 6.0 litres but they were not restricted by electronics etc. The engines of the 21st century are much more complex.
