Intermittent loss of power

Postby Dan_Z on Tue, 29 Jun 2021 2:44 +0000

Hi Guys,

I have a 2011 D4D Hilux with around 168800km on the clock. It has developed a problem where it will seem to loose power briefly, like little throttle response, but then recovers and seems OK. It seems to do it after having been parked for a while, and does it not long after starting to drive, but seems to be OK once it has recovered. It starts normally, and has never stalled. The engine light has not come on and there do not seem to be any error codes in the ECU, and there are no mods to the engine.

I checked the fuel filter for water or dirt, but there did not seem to be anything out of the ordinary, though I replaced the filter at the time. I also cleaned out the MAF sensor.

I have wondered about the SCV, or possibly the turbo stepper motor, but woudl have expected some sort of error codes if that was the problem.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Cheers,

DanZ

Just for anyone’s interest, I tracked the problem down to a fault with the aftermarket cruise control. One of the things that sent me in that direction was the fact that the ECU was not showing any fault codes.

I contacted the company that supplies them and they were very helpful in helping to identifying the problem and supplying a new part to fix it.

The Hilux is now driving fine again and hopefully the problem is solved.

Well done Dan, good to hear you resolved it and good that you came back to let us know the outcome.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Did this power loss occur without cruise control engaged?

Yes it did, the throttle signal goes through the cruise control at all times, even if cruise is not engaged.
