Vibration in 4th gear under heavy acceleration after tune

Postby Bluesr5 on Mon, 03 May 2021 6:19 +0000

Hello

I recently had an ecu remap on a dyno which has been great. I have a 2013 Hilux and have noticed if I am in 4th gear and put the foot down with more pressure I get a vibration through the driveline. I did take it back to the tuner and they said it is due to the extra torque and diesels need to be revved out more. I have adjusted my driving style but I am wondering if anyone has experienced similar? It doesnt happen in the first 3 gears.

Is it more noticeable at low RPM? Does it get better or worse as the Rpm increase?

Yes more noticeable at low rpm. When I change into 4th and slowly accelerate it is fine but if more pressure is placed on the pedal, that is when it happens. It is a similar feeling if you arent doing enough speed in the right gear i.e 55kph in 4th then trying to accelerate and you need to drop down a gear to get the right rpm to move forward. Not sure if that makes sense

I think you will find that's quite normal behavior or a tuned 1kd. I assume the problem is below 2200RPM and goes away after that.

Yes it seems to be more profound in lower revs. Appreciate your responses davo94

Diesels don't like heavy throttle at low revs, tuned or not. Although diesels normally have torque at lower revs, they don't like to lug under throttle. Excessive throttle at low revs just overfuels the engine and bogs it down. At low revs the turbo doesn't spin enough to give enough boost to match the fuel going in.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. All of that makes sense
