2007 Kun26 3.0 howling on acceleration

Postby Locky_10 on Mon, 01 Feb 2021 1:12 +0000

Hi Guys

Just looking for some direction. When I accelerate I get a howling like a tyre loosing traction coming from the front. It goes away as I continue to accelerate and doesn't happen again until I stop and take off again.
My first thought was fan belt so I replaced it and still have the same noise. If the tensioner was getting weak wouldn't the belt squeal and be there all the time?

I'd appreciate any thoughts

Could be your fan clutch - its a fluid type which can degrade over time.

The tensioner has tension marks on it which will give you an idea of how good the spring is if thats the issue. The search here is your friend for more info on that.
I might be wrong.

Thanks

I did a search and there was mention of the same problem but no one seemed to have found the answer.

I'm gunna bite the bullet and change out the timing belt and tensioner, drive belt tensioner, cam shaft seal and water pump this weekend. All reports on this site are that I'm well overdue for the water pump. The timing belt is at 100k ish so is there anyway. I can't ever remember changing the wp and the car has 500k. I've had the car from 100k.

oh yes, could be any of those things if you have those kms on it. You can buy the bearings for serpentine belt pulleys much cheaper than buying new pulleys - there is a thread here on that.

Do yourself a favour and buy genuine parts. Some places do a front end package which includes the water pump, belts, pulleys etc.

Could be a boost leak but oil will make that obvious.

Hi Guys

Replaced timing belt & tensioner. Fan/drive belt and tensioner plus idler pulleys and still there. Any other suggestions. I'll check the turbo but don't really know what to for there. There is a small oil leak visible under the turbo but not enough to drip.

Guys

Pulled the intake off and checked the turbo and it spins ok and no apparent damage to the fins. Checked the intercooler connection hose and all tight. I don't know how free the turbo is supposed to be but it felt ok. I removed the front drive shaft and noise still there.

I can't explain it any better than it sounds like a tyre breaking loose when you accelerate too hard (not in my Hilux). If I accelerate slowly it doesn't do it.

Is there anywhere else that might make that noise under load.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi Dave, done that no problem there either.

It's got me stumped because it's not constant.

Thanks for the reply

It sounds like your turbo might be on the way out. Under certain loads they tend to make a noise when they are about to go. Its hard to test by looking or feeling for play.

Ok guys update,

It ended up being the center bearing on the tail shaft. The rubber element had some small cracking that I could see so I decided to change it out. When I pulled it off I found the element had failed in a couple of places that weren't visible from the bottom. When the tail shaft was under load the the element would flex enough to allow the metal shield on the yoke rub against the rubber element then move away as the load reduced. Hence the howling that sounded like tyres.

Any way just wanted to pass that on.

Thanks for the update Locky, it's always good to track down an issue, despite the wild-goose chase getting to the nub of the problem. Hope it's all fixed for you now, and others will benefit from your experience. ;)
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.
