low pitch whine

So I started hearing a random low pitch whine today. It's happens at idle though more so at low revs (under 1.5k). Can't hear the noise under full load. Can't hear the noise in the engine bay, can ever so slightly hear it under the car but from inside the car you can hear it well. any help would be appreciated thanks

Is it when you turn the wheel? Could be a power steering pump as i know a few others have had this issue before.

I tried turning the steering wheel it doesn't make a whine
only on low rpms. i think its the alternator. i doubt its the power steering pump

Yeah, power steering pumps on the way out may only do it low rpm as they might not get enough power once they start to go off?

I have done an alternator before and don't recall any sort of whine before it stopped. All it did was blow the main fuse in the car and then wouldnt charge anything.

yea what i meant is theres no noise on turning the seering wheel. the noise is only there once you rev the car but low rpms. The noise is actually gone now it was there for 2 days but i have no doubt it will come back. here is a video i found on one of the forums which is the same issue as mine. https://youtu.be/8teuWN53H6U

Those that could help will need more information to help you out
Engine - D4D?
Year?
Km?
Any engine fault codes?
Has any work been done recently / Anything different added in the last few days/week?
Aftermarket mods?
Any replaced OEM parts?
Maintenance?
What have you looked at so far?

If its an older D4D, start with checking intercooler hoses for any cracks + check hose clamp fittings
Then check all vacuum hoses + MAP filter
Once more information is at hand can then consider more expensive possibilities

Yeah, does sound like a bearing binding up to me. So anything along the main belt line could be the issue??

it is a D4D
2013
113 kms
no engine faults
no work been done recently
always serviced at toyota

Good info there
2013 - intercooler and vacuum lines should still be okay but worth checking hoses and clamps
At 113km could be something like alternator rectifier or as Diezel45 suggests a bearing.
If you are handy on the tools you can take the belt off and spin each bearing
Hows the water pump? Any light pink tell tail coolant splatter visible?

My 2012 3lt d4d 97000km started to make a very similar whine yesterday. You can hear it in the cab mostly just off idle around 1000rpm, can't hear anything in the engine bay.

Seen a few things on the form sounding like it could be the alternator or idler pulleys. I was going to pull the belt off and see what the idlers and alternator feel like and run it for a few seconds and see of it gos away. there is a bit of a different noise coming from the front of the engine that sounds like a bearing on its way out.

Ill let you know what i find.

Had a bit more of a look last night and its definitely the alternator. I removed the belt and ran it for a few seconds and the noise was gone. All the idler pulleys felt ok, put the belt back on and check the charge voltage and it was only sitting at 12.8 at idle. it would get up to 13.5 with a few revs but as soon as turned the lights on the volt would drop.

I unplugged the connector on the back of the alternator and the noise went away. Mine sounded very similar to the youtube vid posted above. I wouldn't rule out the idler pulleys but id check out your alternator.

Hope this is of some help.

If your battery is a bit low (winter tends to do that) the alternator whines under load. Your idle volts may be a symptom of a low battery. Unplugged connector may confirm that when the whine goes away.

Check your battery first!

One leads to the other! Cranking with a flat battery will kill your starter motor and also leads to overloaded alternator. The starter brushes will burn and arc causing damage. Keep your battery charged and use a good charger once a month to keep it in good shape. Just like ego, ....it's not a dirty word, exercise it daily and keep it in good shape (Skyhooks 1970's) ;)

The two things are interdependent, if your alternator is not charging, the battery will suffer and that cascades to damage to the starter motor.
