Catalytic Converter hollow out.

Postby chesh2 on Tue, 28 Apr 2020 11:11 +0000

Afternoon people.

I have a muffler delete on my 2011 lux with the exhaust dumping before the rear axle.

My question is,
Will hollowing out the cat throw a code or cause overboosting?

Ps
Yes I know it illegal if caught!!

Not necessarily. Plenty of people run a straight through no cat system. If your system is old and sensitive however, you might be more likely to trigger a code.
I might be wrong.

Ive had the system that I made on for years now, no cat with one resonator midway and dumped at the diff. No codes or issues. Only a handful of them seem to have problems with overboosting.

My last rego check the mechanic challenged me on my 3" exhaust saying it had the cat bypassed (which it doesn't) so I told him if he wanted to open the system up to see he would be up for the cost of a new system! He quickly declined!
Unless they check the exhaust gas I'm not sure they can detect it but if they do you'll be done! On the other hand, the op asked about a completely through flow system which would be obvious that it was not ok. In nsw I would think the next rego inspection will prove one way or another.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

My first hilux ('06) I hollowed out the cat, and had a dump pipe, didn't have any issues in the 100'000km+ or so I drove it like that.

Out of interest, how did you hollow it out?

Drilled it out with a long drill bit used for wood (like 40cm long x 15mm wide) and also bashed it with steel rod. On my 06 hilux it was almost right next to a join in the exhaust, so was easy to do. My current 2014 one it'd be a lot harder to do as its 'upstream' of a bend in the exhaust, so im not sure how you'd go about it if that's the case

Back in the day we just used a broom skick and a hammer to break it up and bash it out.

Bit of 12mm round bar with a 90 degree bend in the end in the cordless drill really cleans them out I’ve heard on the grape vine. Makes more turbo noise afterwards.

Is the OP talking diesel or petrol? My 2011 was very sensitive to exhaust flow through the cats. Had to do no all sorts of trickery to allow it to be happy with high flow cats. A gutted cat would be very high flow!
