Unsealed 4x4 KUN26 problems article

Postby wombat81 on Mon, 05 Aug 2019 10:28 +0000

Morning all. I just came across this article in the Unsealed 4x4 e-mag: https://magazine.unsealed4x4.com.au/en_US/14852/213012/d4d_hilux_common_problems_and_solutions__.html

It discusses a range of "common" problems with KUN26 including:
- failure of injectors/seals and possibly resulting in piston failure
- Turbo stepper motor failure
- clutches burning out prematurely
- EGR blockage

I'd like to start a bit of discussion about the article. Firstly, I thought the injector seal issue was specific to 2005-2008 KUN26s. The article states that valves should be checked every 40000kms and that injector seals should be replaced every 40000km also. I don't have my service booklet with me for my 2010 model, but I don't remember seeing that in there? Are these guys just talking about 2005-2008 models, or should I be worried? Mine now has 220k on it and I've never inspected the valves nor changed the seals.

I think the clutch discussion is fair enough and has been done to death on these forums, I think.

What are people's experiences with the stepper motor? I've never had an issue.

I think the EGR thing is pretty well documented, too. The debate around whether a catch can is the way to go will go on forever, I think.

I'm really keen to hear people's thoughts on the article because it all sounds very much doom and gloom to me...

cheers

An interesting article. At least it was written by an hilux owner that is still a hilux owner. I know that these problems are common but not to me at least, my ute has 422000 kms on it and the first set of injectors lasted 365000kms and i was happy with that. The original clutch was changed at 375000kms as preventive matainence. I have had 2 water pumps the first one at 250000kms or there abouts and again at 400500kms. My ute is a 2006 space cab sr. I would like a new one some day but i will wait till they get the dramas sorted out (dpf and that). There sure does seem to be a lot of people happy to see Toyota owners not having a good run
I love my ute but not as much as my dashound does!!
I just put a 3 inch exhaust on the ute, now the D4D sounds like a V4!!!

I'm not all over the DPF thing, but I see a class action has been launched against Toyota. It seems to me that the DPF is doing what it's designed to do, people just don't like the regeneration phase where it pumps out some white smoke. If it's working correctly, I don't see the problem.

Yep, these have been done to death here too.

The injector seal/seats are consumable wear items. Best to watch the oil pickup or the injection feedback values on techstream. Replacing them every 40,000kms seem to be the advice. In your situation checking the oil pickup would be a sensible/peace of mind thing to do if you havent noticed any other problems.

Turbo stepper - seems to be a problem for mainly those who have dunked their hilux in mud etc. They can go for other reasons and some never have a problem. There were are few issues discussed the other week and my 05 throws a code in really wet weather or when I'm towing but its got 350,000kms on it and probably in need of a new stepper motor/turbo

Clutches probably 90% of cases are user error. The rest probably genuine faulty parts. Toyota did increase the size of the clutch in about 2008 so they must have recognised a problem.

Yeah, I've run both a catchcan and an egr block. I only run the egr block now as the catchcan was in the way of other mods and seemed redundant with no soot coming through the egr. egrs are problems on other makes too.
I might be wrong.

In regards to the DPF thing i am sure it will be sorted at some point. My mum and dad have a fortuner with DPF and they have had no dramas at all. Its just 3 year's old. In any case I am sure that the worst hilux is still better than the best land rover

I changed the oil today and had a good look at the mesh in the sump. It looks totally clean, so that's comforting.

Sorry if this is off-topic but I'm a newb and having difficulty navigating this forum. I have a 2013 D-4D with a KUN26R engine and I want to flush and refill the radiator. Problem is there is no radiator cap on top. Whats the best way to refill and bleed ?

Best thing to do is search using the link near the top. Something like "bleed cooling system" will do. Here are a couple to get you started:

2012 with 223000 on the clock. Original injectors, clutch and injector seals. Only things that have gone wrong are 2 indicator bulbs and a headlight bulb.

A bit of mechanical sympathy and good fuel go a long way.

What do your injector feedback values look like?

I’d have to get them checked.

Maybe check your oil pickup next time you do an oil change - just to be on the safe side. It takes no time at all.

With 223ks after 7 years your truck has been kept running like a taxi, that's why it's in good shape ;)
My 2013 has only 63ks so it needs a good run every now and then. Worst thing you can do to a vehicle especially a diesel is to leave it in the shed :?
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.
