broken Turbo

Postby snick on Thu, 01 Nov 2018 5:23 +0000

Hey guys need some help

I have a 2012 stock diesel hilux
the last week had an egr fault code come up and no power for a few minutes, then it would kick back in and drive fine
i cleared the code and it drove fine, wasnt slow or sluggish
thought it was a blocked egr so booked in it
have now been told i have a broken turbo, been told its the rear fins that are gone

if the turbo was gone woudnt it be blowing out smoke and drive rubbish as?
has anyone had anything like that happen or can point me in the right direction to get it fixed

thanks

If the fins are damaged the variable vane actuator probably will compensate somewhat to make up the deficit in boost but only as far as it can then after that the engine will not have sufficient boost. New turbo is probably your best option. :(

And no it probably won't blow smoke etc.

If you do have to replace the turbo, and the damage is on the turbine (exhaust) side, make sure you do a compression test before going any further. The damage may have been caused by a foreign object I.e. a piece of exhaust valve going through the turbo which caused the damage in the first place.
Have seen more than one brand new turbo ruined before it does any work.

X1
Something went through the turbine to do that damage. The only other thing that comes to mind is overfuelling causing excessive heat. Also have you run the engine without an air filter? Just a small pebble or grains of sand will stuff a turbine. Does it have a chip?
