Whining noise and no charge

Hi all, recently had a whine coming from the front of the engine, thought it might have been idler pulley or something. The battery has also been dead, hooked up the meter and theres no charge from the alternator, sitting at 12.6 when running. Could it be bearings on the alternator? Would this stop it from working/charging? Thanks
