Timing belt advice. Age or km ?

Postby dabbler on Mon, 10 Sep 2018 7:50 +0000

I have a low km 2013 SR5 D4D. It did about 5k per year
until I picked it up about 18 months ago and about 20k per year since. Just coming up to 40k now.

So the question is, what should I do about things like timing belt, normally done at 150k but way earlier than I'm likely to hit that distance.

Any advice, opinion, experience ?

That's a good question.

I generally disagree with the time based servicing intervals especially for low km vehicles. But in this case you may want to change it out for peace of mind... but I'd leave it until 50k.
I might be wrong.

Service book has it at 7.5 years or 150000km. Did mine at 100000km just after the 7.5 year mark. Cheap insurance.

I only use the time base service intervals for coolant, clutch & brake fluids, oils.belts........."perishable" items. I imagine the timing belt might suffer age related problems as well as wear related problems.
Even new tyres over 5 years old cannot be fitted to a vehicle in the USA, so I'm guessing that timing belts might have a similar age related life span.
Like the previous post.....cheap insurance (unless the new one has been on the shelf for 7.5 years!)

A couple of years is understandable, but the 6 month service intervals are just taking consumers for a ride.

The water pump usually lets you know when your timing belt is due... I did mine at 130,000 when it started leaking.

Thanks for the replies. Ultimately, my travels over the next 12-18 months will help decide and where I am at the time will probably come into play too.

My travelling patterns are already forcing me to juggle things like tyre rotations and services a bit as I try to avoid service maintenance on the road.
