Revs fine but no power. MAP vacuum hose cracked

Postby Curt Turtle on Tue, 17 Apr 2018 9:06 +0000

I have recently been upgrading my 2005 D4D Hilux and it has been going great until this week. I have replaced the injectors, installed a DPChip, throttle controller, 2" lift and new tires; and have exhaust, catch can, and prefilter on order. It has been running amazingly with more power than ever before.
This week I degreased the engine, waited 5 mins, hosed it off (mist setting) and inox-ed the engine bay. I was careful to avoid electrical connectors, but I there may have been some splash over. Now the car has no power. It will crawl along if I granny it and will slowly reach speed. However, above 2000rpm you can hear the turbo spool up and... nothing. The car just plods along as if there is no turbo. The acceleration is ad if there was no turbo at all. It will rev to 5000 rpm and won't shift or accelerate. Going up a slight gradient is painful and won't accelerate beyond 50kmph. It shifts weirdly when gannying it too.
Please help. I just dropped $11k into this truck to keep it going for another 10years. I really hope I haven't ruined it.

Take out all the mods - the chip and throttle controller, disconnect the battery for a while... check all the plugs and see how you go.

The DP Chip never really worked well with the 2005 euro3 engines... but they were good at putting a hole through pistons
I might be wrong.

I have tried it without the DPChip and has the same problems with about 20% less power again. But I might go over all the plugs with some contact cleaner and see if there is any water trapped in them. I had the battery off this morning for about an hour, and it didn't make any changes. I'll see how it goes after the plugs are cleared.

Check that the small hoses have not come off your MAP sensor filter or are leaking. Also check for any cracks on the MAP filter

Thank you so much for pointing me in the direction of the MAP filter. There was a crack on the hose going into it right where it connected. Must have been sucking in air. I touched it and the hose just fell off. Cleaned the filter, snipped the hose to the right length, reseated it. The car made the most horrific grinding noise when it turned over, but it is running great now. The grinding noise was also a once off as far as I can tell. Thank god. I am driving to Adelaide on Saturday from Melbourne, and wasn't too keen on taking my truck in that shape. I would post a pic, but I don't know how.
Thank you again. Really saved me from an expensive mechanics bill, if they had to go exploring.

No worries mate, glad you got it going.
It can be a tricky one because it doesn't usually throw up any codes. If you have a decent boost gauge you can usually pick it up because the turbo boosts high but car has no power.
The grinding noise may have just been your starter motor

Great outcome - well done Downesy and CT 8-)

Thanks for the pic for others to see
As Downesy posted - the filter itself can crack too

Title edited for search-ability should others have the same issue.
This same symptom (with additional causes) has been covered in another thread here: Engine loses power

The grinding noise may have been if I got some overspray from cleaning the MAF sensor and got some ether fumes in the airbox. At least that is what a mechanic friend said. Hence why it was only the one time.
