No engine response past 3000rpm

Postby gammo42 on Thu, 15 Feb 2018 4:04 +0000

Hello all, I know this is a well covered topic and I have read a lot of them so I apologise for raising another topic this again. I am completely stumped and so is my mechanic on a performance issue with my 06 Hilux.

My hilux was extremely sluggish down low, would pick up when the turbo kicked in but would not keep revving out past 3000rpm, felt like it was starving. Absolutely no fault codes. Hours of diagnosis all pointed to the requirement to replace the injectors. EGR was checked, MAF etc etc, all the small things.

New injectors installed - same symptoms still exist. Ouch, I am in pain......

Any thoughts from the experts? Could the SCV throw these symptoms?

Thanks in advance,

One very frustrated Hilux owner.....

Have you driven others of the same age? She could be just tired! I never rev mine past 3k anyway cos it does absolutely nothing after that anyway!

Only thing I could suggest is to check all your vacuum hose ends to make sure they are connected. That costs nothing.
Happened on mine, same symptoms, check engine light on dash didn't come up. You'll probably have to remove the aftercooler to have a real good look, but that's no big deal. Go over every hose and electrical connection.
To be honest I would be pretty pissed at the mechanic if I was you, thousands of dollars worth of work and labour spent on guess work. He would have removed the aftercooler anyway, but still worth a shot I reckon.
SCV was cactus in mine but only caused intermittant rough idle. Others may have had different experience with it.
Regards Chris.

This may help with your question.

"1kd-Ftv owners

It seems the suction control valves can cause a some minor symptoms as they get a bit worn.
In particular the older style.
Up to 09/2009 - 120 prado & hilux.
Basically if it's the short body unit.
There is an upgrade available.

Also the later (10-2009 -150 prado) although we don't see issues as such, the few we have replaced, around 200,000k, our clients feedback has been positive.
They seem to make it more smooth & responsive."

This info was provided on another site by a very knowledgeable 1KD specialist.

Just noticed that you are in NZ. So I suppose giving you the contact details for the 1KD mechanic that provides advice on these issues is not of much use. He is no longer involved on this site, but is a wealth of knowledge on the 1KD engines. He specializes in these engines, particularly with injector issues.

Hi Krat,
I could not open the image with the contacts of the mechanic for the 1KD engines, and when I message you messages stay in my Outbox instead of being sent for some reason.
could you please PM me.
Thanks,
Ross

I will provide an update for you all, I am still frustrated but not so much as on the day of my original post. Apologies for the delay in responding......

Problem has been partially resolved. The injector issue was resolved with an update to the Scan Tool. My older version 2006 Hilux did not respond to the mechanics scan tool, he asked around his network and was able to borrow a scan tool that fully tuned the new injectors. There was a noticeable improvement.

I had what felt like a normal vehicle again. I then went on a couple of long highway trips and found that I was still having power issues at higher speeds.

I made my mechanic replace the CSV, to ensure everything was new, but it made no difference. The car is good down low, and when taking off from the lights, but at 90km/h or when towing my boat there is no grunt for over taking etc. It is like it hits a limiter and just will not supply any more power. Hilux struggles to continue to increase in speeds past 110km/h.

I am still frustrated and will be looking to get a second opinion from another mechanic. Just trying to source a reputable and knowledgeable D4D mechanic in Townsville.
