1KD Engine Timing

Postby STONE225 on Thu, 17 Aug 2017 3:38 +0000

Hello all,

So I have looked extensively and cannot find anything conclusive so I'll ask here.

I have made a massive amateur move, and I have spun the camshaft pulley without it being connected via belt to the crank pulley. I have a Haynes manual and have done many Google's, but I cannot confirm how to get it back in time.

All I can find is that if I rotate the cam so the pulley notch lines up with the block arrow, I'm fine, but which cylinder is that for?

If I rotate the cam once, how far have a actually put it out?

Cheers in advance.

If all the marks are aligned it should be for number 1 cylinder at TDC

Thanks Rory, all I can confirm is both the crank and cam notches are lined up. Obviously don't want to risk it. Is there a way to confirm without taking the lid off the engine?

Theres only one mark so if you've turned it 360°then it'll be exactly where it started yes? If all ya marks line up youll be sweet.

Ok. Can't be too careful. Don't think a new engine would be cheap.

Cross posting as I originally replied to the Gen 3-6 Hilux (1978-2005) forum (viewtopic.php?f=82&t=20133&p=436021#p436021).

I replaced my timing belt however I made the mistake of manually cranking the engine on the cam shaft pulley (top pulley) and not the crank shaft, so after a complete rotation my crank shaft notch is about 3 - 4mm in front of the notch (so hasn't fully completed a cycle compared to the cam shaft).

I assume one of the pulleys jumped a tooth however I'm not sure which one. What's the best course of action?

I could remove the belt, move the crank shaft the 3-4mm to align it, put the timing belt back together and then manually crank the engine over twice to see if there are any issues. Thoughts?

It Sounds like it's one tooth out just redo it And check again.
Just move it one notch

Thanks dave g.

Is there a risk of engine damage with it jumping one tooth (I only cranked the engine manually)?

I rotated the crank pulley the one tooth distance without the belt on.

Edited. I suggested the the cam pulley may have been the one to jump a tooth however based on how the alignment was (the cam pulley was aligned but the crank pulley was one tooth before alignment) that would suggest it was the crank pulley that jumped. If it was the cam pulley that jumped, the crank pulley would be one tooth past the alignment. Make sense?

Following up on this.

I tensioned the belt up, cranked it over twice manually and the notches aligned so I turned the engine over and took it for a test drive - all is good.

I must have missed the piece that you had not put tension on it . so glade it is all good to go.

I had it tensioned when I first cranked it over however I had to redo the belt to realign everything, so at the stage of asking above I had left it untensioned while I was seeking advice.

I didn't crank it over untensioned at all. :)
