Idler and Tensioner Pulley Bearings

Postby sharp018 on Sun, 02 Apr 2017 7:34 +0000

Hello, i have been trying to research on this forum and internet as to getting the numbers for the pulley bearings

i need to replace all 3 bearings the 2 idlers and the tensioner. However just dont know what bearings to use

the pulleys them selves are in good condtion still have a bit of life they havnt worn to thin yet

I pulled off the pulleys to record the numbers on them here they are

TOP Pulley: 6301RDHJ Koyo/T049
MIDDLE Pulley: 6301RDHJ Koyo/T054
Tensioner: 2304-17

if anyone has any cross refference numbers of after market bearings please post below
i got given 2x SKF 6301-2RSH bearings but unsure if they are the right ones as i cant find anything to say they are

You can not get the bearing for the tensioner. The other two use the same bearing and two bearings per pulley. Think they are a 6302 bearing

i wouldn't be to hasty in rushing off to buy cheap bearings for these but would recommend you replace the whole units.
All the letters and numbers on the bearing are important, 6301 bearings are 37 OD, 12 ID and 12 wide, the other letters dictate a lot of hidden and very important information like seals, duty rating and internal clearance. Make sure you buy the exact same bearings or you will face premature failure, a disaster if one of these fails. Dont be tempted by a cheap 63012RS bearing.

They were talking Koyo Bearings, Geoff.
Koyo Bearings is actually owned by TMC. Made in Japan.
Now one of the best bearing companies in the world.

I am definitely with you on the Chinese bearing thing. They are crap.

Thanks Roo, I realise that but every bearing company will make 6301 bearings, he was given some SKF 6301 2RSH bearings that will be the same measurements and look the same but aren't. Beside the quality (nothing wrong with SKF) the letters on the end of the number, called the Suffix, is where the difference will be. Need to find out what Koyo Suffix's mean before choosing a replacement bearing.

Toyota want and arm and a leg for all the pulleys. I've been down this road before. I haven't got around to replacing them yet. I looked into aftermarket Gates Pulleys and they have shit China bearings in them which is a real bummer. Some I think literally had no other markings on the bearings besides the word 'China' on them.

I think in this case with pulleys and engine accessories always try and go genuine. Toyota spare parts pricing is hard to swallow at most times.

Yes, but if you use the genuine drive belt and as a general comment, think how long the parts last. That's where you get your real value. Toyota parts are actually cheaper in most cases if you work it out.

EP241
EP258
EP259

Can only see how they go, never used Nuline bearings before so will just wait and see

Hi all,

I am starting to hear a squeak coming from my engine bay that sounds like worn pulley bearings, just wondering if there are any that are common to wear out so I can start there instead of pulling them all to track down the squeak.

yeah. good luck with that.

Got the 1GR-FE. 4 idlers including the tensioner.

Broomhandled every pulley for a few days until I was sure which 1 was the noisy one. (only became noisy when A/C clutch engaged) Decided it was EP236 (1660431010), which there is 2 of on the engine. So I ordered 2 so I could do both at the same time. Still Noisy. So I got a EP239 (1660431012) for the tensioner and changed that. Still noisy. I will do the final 1 (EP238/1660331040) before summer.

Unusual for a bearing to squeak, they usually rumble then growl in the early stages. Could be the clutched pulley on the alternator, id be trying a new belt first if it has a lot of KM on it and give the idlers a spin while its off.

If your up around the 200 000 km mark wouldn't hurt to put in a new belt and set of idlers/bearings and tensioner anyway.

Im pretty sure the bearings in the idlers are are 6301 2rs bearings, a pair of them in each.

Then there is always a chance it isn't belt of idler related, try using a 3 foot length of hose held to your ear as a stethoscope to locate the noise.
