Rattle at idle and warm

Postby mix06lux on Sun, 06 Nov 2016 11:35 +0000

So I've just noticed a rattle coming from the front of the engine. Sounds like it is coming from around the pulleys/radiator fan section. It doesn't sound like a pulley that's on the way out and it is not constant more rattly.

Also only happens when engine is warm. I turned off the ute for 15 while I cleaned up some stuff and turned it back on and it didn't make the noise but after a min or 2 of the engine being on you could slowly start to hear it come back. Got me stumped.

Utes an 06 sr 1kd always serviced. Just did a full service 4k ago.

I can fix almost anything but diagnosing the problem is the hard part.

Thanks in advance

Mic

How many Kms?
Once you get up into the 200K and up there's a whole host of things at the front that can make strange noises.
Idler pulley bearings, A/C bearing, alternator bearing, loose front crank pulley/harmonic balancer.
Cam belt and drive belt tensioners can make a knocking/rattle noise too. My drive belt tensioner was making a knocking noise, but only when cold.
Regards Chris.

Take the belt off and run it for a sec and see if it gone.

Only has 110k on it but the belt does squeak when it's a cold Morning.

Was going to put a new belt on so I'll run it for a sec when I have it off

So basically look/feel for a pulley that doesn't spin freely or makes a noise?

Rattle at idle

Postby Streety75 on Thu, 08 Nov 2018 3:04 +0000

Hey my 2011 d4d has developed a rattle at idle, it’s fine when it’s cold but when the engine is warmed up it starts, I replaced the serpentine belt, both idler pulleys and tensioner pulley, but still does it, if I put some pressure on the tensioner arm while motor is idling the noise disappears,
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated,
If I remove the belt the noise is not there,
Thanks again

rattle on light load/acceleration

Postby Streety75 on Thu, 08 Nov 2018 6:34 +0000

Hi
So when engine is warm and at idle I have a rattle on my 2011 d4d, I have changed the serpentine belt, both idler pulleys, the tensioner pulley, the rattle is still there. If I put a little pressure on the tensioner arm when at idle the noise disappears,
Have browsed the forum a few members have had this issue but never seemed to solve the issue,
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks
