waterpump?

Postby sico on Sat, 09 Apr 2016 6:38 +0000

Hi guys, our 2006 d4d had its 200k service last week and dealer says waterpump needs replacing. Slight leak from shaft as per pic attached.
How urgent is this job?
Is it like asking how longs a piece of string?... LolImage

You have between 1 and 100000 kms left on that pump. I'd do it now but I don't like breaking down.

Ive got a similar leak on my 2007 D4D.

Have had this leak for 25K kms and hasnt been a problem until the Easter weekend just past, when the loss of coolant over the last 2 yrs has finally meant not enough coolant to cool the engine on the long haul, only a very slight temp rise, but the Air con turns off when this happens, which triggered me to the problem. Once I topped up the coolant level, the slight temp rise went away. Im on here on New hilux.net to see how typical this leak is and what are possible fixes and prices, as Id rather fix this now, rather than too fan down the track any more.

Yeah I'm currently contemplating the DIY option..
I guess you didn't use genuine parts at that price.

GMB pump from Repco. Made in Japan. Easy job if can do pump only. could be a big one if timing belt alternator needs to come off.Or pay me :D
It's only a slow leak, not urgent, but do it.
New DENSO Injectors are the go! New genuine parts.

Check your injectors about every 10,000k.
WARNING check oil pickup screen is clear
no chips no tune ups - why increase risk of piston cracking?

I'm presuming ours has the old one piece. Gotta have a better look at it though. Only thing I see as difficult for me is removing the camshaft pulley.

Strange that it went at 200 thousand. Was it done with the timing belt at 150?

No only timing belt done at 150k by Yarra Valley 4x4 in healsville vic. Checked service records. They didn't do timing belt tensioner either..
If I knew more at the time it would've been done then.

It comes off easy. Just a gentle tap with a soft mallet.

I got the same leak. Toyota even listed it as being "severely" leaking. Haven't fixed it properly in a couple years cause I haven't found the time. Been really meaning to do it though!

So how often do you top up coolant?
Ours dropped an inch on the radiator overflow bottle in 150kms roughly.

Every few months. It only ever gets to the Low marker on the external reservoir but no less.

I'm more refering to getting the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt off and then doing it up to the 98nm without removing the valve cover.
All workshop manuals say to hold camshaft with a spanner.
Someone on here mentioned using vice grips on the old belt over the sprocket to hold it.

Yep, yep, yep.
One of the first things you do is to loosen off the camshaft bolt with the timing belt assembly still in place.
If you have not got a rattle gun, then hold the crankshaft bolt and undo the camshaft bolt.
Just leave the camshaft bolt on finger tight until you remove the timing belt.

Line up your marks first.

Method without a rattle gun.

Image

19mm six point socket for the camshaft bolt. 22mm for the crankshaft bolt.

Image

Alloy bar and a bit of a hit with a dumpy to shock it out of position. Don't be stupid with this, though.

Image

Be careful you don't loose this.

Good idea to do the camshaft seal while you are doing this job. This is a big job when done right.
