Over boosting

I have just removed my blanking plate (with 7mm hole). Took the car for a 20 min test drive and It did not over
boost once, problem fixed!!!!!!

babajangas, are you running an EGR blanking plate? If so remove that before doing anything else.

Hmm problem masked id say rather than fixed. Many many people run the 7mm hole with no problems. Look further.

True but I also run 3" exhaust without a cat or restrict plate / washer.

So maybe with standard exhaust or exhaust with some back pressure it is not an issue.

See how it goes over coming days and weeks.

Was good all of yesterday, drove home to Sydney today (5 hours). First 2 hours it was perfect, 5min after i turned onto M1 freeway it started happening again all the way home.

davo94 was right.

Didn't bother removing turbo as i thought it was fixed.

Not sure where to go from here. Try the kids at Toyota, remove turbo / clean vanes, start swapping parts from a know good Hilux, try and find decent mechanic in Sydney.

I've got my custom 3inch exhaust with no cat and just a small muffler to take the bark out. Has a restrictor plate with 7mm hole as well. Now until I seen this thread I put the over boost down to my supercheap SaaS boost guage. I only ever see it happen once in a blue moon and I don't notice any change in power. When I see it I usually back off and bury the foot again and it's back to normal. Has never thrown a code either that's why I have never really worried about it.

Try resetting the ECU after removing the restrictive plates on yoUR Egr.

Yep, I removed the EFI fuse for about 3 hours while I removed the plate. Once I put the fuse back in I let the truck idle all the way to operating temperature. Is that the right way?

Try taking the circlip off of the turbo actuator arm and moving the vane actuator through its full stroke. Sometimes these become sticky and cause the boost to stay on whilst the ECU is looking for it to drop off. Get a good supply of 5mm E clips first though as putting that E clip back on is a bugger. I have had three inch exhausts with and with out cats and always with EGR blanked. Never had an issue along with a lot of other people who have similar setups. You may also find the boost comes on quicker with the arm being free'd up.

Had it in the workshop today vanes in the turbo seem good I'm going to swap actuators with a known good one tomorrow and see how it goes toyota don't sell the actuators seperatley so if it is that it going to cost a bit getting a whole new turbo only other thing to try is new maf sensor ill let you know the outcome

Mines still doing it, just did a trip down the coast with a few 100 kg's in the back and it sure enough was hitting 20ish psi regularly, I just wonder if it is normal, not everyone has a boost gauge, a scan gauge doesn't really show it as it reacts slower than a mechanical gauge

My guage is mechanical and when it does snap round to 20ish it usually backs off just as quick.

weeksa, I've already put a new map sensor on it have got a new maf to chuck on just in case I have heard they can be a bit tempromental i we'll keep you posted should have some answers tomorrow afternoon

Had the car on the dyno for a while today and couldn't make it over boost drove it around for a few hours and it wouldn't over boost ...... Only thing I can put it down to is checked if vanes were sticking and didn't seem to be maby manually checking them freed something up don't know will drive it for a few days and see how it goes

The stepper motor does not put the vanes through their full range of movement - often when we have had the exhaust housing off the turbo you would be amazed by the amount of crud that shifts when you fully cycle the vanes to max movement..... hope it works for you.
