Rattle noise from Engine bay/turbo

Postby swhilux on Tue, 07 Jul 2015 9:18 +0000

Has anyone noticed a metallic rattle from the engine bay? Sounds like it's coming from the turbo. It's a light tinkling noise. I can hear in the cab at cruise revs. No it's not injector rattle or anything else. It is coming from the drivers side of the engine.

Love to hear from you if you've heard anything like this

Yeah this is not normal injector rattle. I've had this car for 2 years. It's a new rattle/tinkling noise that's really shitting me

None yet. I'm thinking it may be the turbo variable vanes.

Same here looked all over. Sound like it's coming from right side engine bay.

Yep that's exactly where it is coming from. I'm pretty sure it's the turbo vanes.

Is it there when the engine is idling?
If so get a length of hose about a metre long and stick one to your ear and use the other end as a stethoscope to pinpoint the source of the noise. It becomes very obvious when you stick the end of the hose in the right place. High pitch noises bounce around a lot and seem to be coming from every direction.

Did anyone pinpoint the cause of the noise? Mine just developed the same noise or I've only just noticed it since I put on a straight through pipe from cat back. After a bit of Dickin around. Discovered that it stops when I disconnect the airflow meter. A mates a mechanic and thinks it's something to do with the egr valve. Might look into doing the erg mod and see what happens....

I have a 2016 hilux 2.8 with 10000km on the clock an just recently started a annoying rattle under bonnent on drivers side only happens when engine is hot at excatly 2000rpm under accleration in either 3rd or 4th gear. Sounds like exhaust heat shield vibrating.

Hi i have my 06 hilux in getting injectors checked values and codes etc... received a phonecall from mech to say the noise is not injectors (makes sense because they are 10k old)!! Said the inlet side of the turbo neede machininig and a clean up of all the carbon will fix the rattle.
In relation to the rattle only wthen cold and under slight load around 13-1500 rpm.
Going to cost me around 700. I will let you know if it fixes the problem. Turbo has a slight oil weep on that side as well.
Fingers crossed. Btw the car runs really well and has 200k on the clock.

Ok for anyone that is interested, the turbo wasnt machined as the girl said they were going to do.

stuck a microscope down the intake manifold and saw that it was 80% blocked with a carbon build up took it off and had it cleaned in an acid bath....

To be honest I cant see where it was taken off so I may have to go back and see them because I was charged $550 for the pleasure, they said it will remove the rattle that i had but I will have to wait till tomorrow to see if that is the case.

Anyway.. will post again when I find out.

Inlet manifold has been cleaned can confirm that.. I will update whether the noise is gone on cold start up tomorrow. :) :)

Hey fellas it's not that the bolts holding the heat shields on the manifold have become loose because the shields themselves have shrunk/squashed a bit and when you are checking them they feel tight because they are seized?

Ok have had two cold starts there has been an improvement, but I can still detect the slightest rattle from 12-1500rpm, but there has been an improvement.

hi guys
I have january 2013 dual cab 3.0d4d manual, 100kkm. about a month ago there is the same rattle around the egr cooler which starts when ( parked in the garage) I press the throtle pedal a little so the the engine does not start to accelerate yet. I also hear some suction noise while driving at low rpm. This started overnight...But the engine became alive. It pulls like never before even though top speed droped about 20km/h lower and the consuption is 30% higer. I had egr cleaned at Toyota dealership a year back and new turbo with electric control motor changed under warranty. Any ideas what would it be this time.
