Aftermarket Top mount intercooler

Postby Bigmak on Wed, 29 Apr 2015 7:47 +0000

Hi Guys

Does anyone know if there is an aftermarket top mount intercooler for the 2014 Hilux SR5 D4D 3.0L Turbo Diesel Engine. One that is fully tig welded and with a better cooling and flowing core.

I believe the current intercooler is clamped / pressed to the end tanks and one side is actually plastic.

I know Cross Country do a nice front mount intercooler kit, but it is not what I am after.

I am after an intercooler that can replace the standard intercooler (a full bolt on no hassle affair) and fits in the factory location and fits under the cowl etc.

Any suggestions or help would be immensely appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Bigmak,

Yes you are correct saying that one side of the intercooler is in fact plastic, but I doubt you will find a better performing unit then the one currently fitted to your vehicle. They perform well given that you haven't blocked the scoop from doing its job (Mounting LED bar on top of your bullbar). Other then that I haven't seen a kit released to replace the top mount, may have to design one yourself with off the shelf components.

There do exist some top mount water to air intercoolers that will replace the factory intercooler - essentially like already stated the factory intercooler is ideal for a top mounted intercooler in that size. Only by going to a different type (ie the water to air) or a larger, front mount will you get better cooling.

I spent ages looking for an aftermarket top mount when building my ute, never found a decent one and ended up getting a front mount instead. Theres heaps of decent fromt mount kits and i recon if your going to the trouble of replacing it anyway thats the way to go. Dropped nearly 50°c out of my egts.

Legendex talk big game. The marketing sounds good but I'd be keen to here some feedback and experiences from actual users.

That price is insane! Think I'll stick with my fan for now until I pull my finger out and build a water to air system.

What are you trying to achieve by fitting a bigger cooler ?

Hey Marsh, just installed one on my 2013 SR5 on friday night and already have the ultimate diesel tuning tune done and the difference to the top end is awesome !! 3200 rpm to 4000 rpm has been a huge difference and also overtaking on the highway in 5th gear is improved heaps.

Hey did you do the top mount only? or the exhaust also?

I believe looking on legendexs website there dyno stats are with the exhaust and intercooler combined. I'm pretty keen to do both they are just a bit pricey. Maybe I will wait to see if the tax man is good to me this year :D

thats alot of coin for top mount,
thats still going to get heat soak at low speed crawling or idling around city :?
ive tried bigger scoop made noticeable difference, but still got hot at crawling or city traffic.
so went to front mount inter cooler set up 550 x 300 x 75 fit in front of radiator and have seen 30 degree drop everywhere thru techstream compared to what i had before,
unbelievable difference noticed the most on hotter days.
well worth effort and i believe gained fuel efficiency :D
FMIC all the way
