OBD2 Gauges comparison

Postby BCH on Sun, 05 Apr 2015 12:30 +0000

There seems to be a whole bagful of different OBD2 gauges now, from the Scangauge II, Ultragauge, Vchecker, Smartgauge, and now the Berrima EDS gauge. I know some are not compatible pre-2005/2006. Has anyone lined these up side by side for a review, or have a personal opinion of one versus another?? I have a SR5 Sept 2007 D4D manual and wonder which will be the best gauge for general engine information & to read & clear codes. Not very interested in reading on my android phone though. It should be dedicated. Most importantly is compatibility and which ones not to buy for this model. I see there are a few Scangauge -v- Ultragauge comparos on the web, but I am looking for something more recent. Anyone tried the EDS yet?

I saw 4wd action flogging of those EDS gauges with subscriptions to their magazine. But at a glance they appear to be a copy of a scanguage II but without the x-gauge feature and the same price? So if thats the case why not stick with a trusted and tested scangauge.

In saying that, at the end of the day they all basically display the same information as each other.

the EDS gauge looks a little nicer than the scangauge, but otherwise nothing special

you can also use your smart phone these days..

DashCommand on IOS with a wifi obd
Torque on Android with a bluetooth obd

I use dash command on iOS very good app search and clear codes etc all gauges boost etc the only thing you can't see injector compensation values but there are a lot of things like coolant temp etc the closest you wil get to toyotas tech stream software without the price $30 for the adapter on eBay and $20 for the app I think but works well so I would recommend only thing if you are running iOS get wifi adapter as Bluetooth adapter is not compatible.

The eds does read boost. It is under MAP pressure. Mine reads 88kpa at idle and up to 170 at full boost.

I stand corrected, But does the scangauge have a dedicated boost readout or is it just manifold pressure as well

I've got a OBDLink MX WiFi Scan Tool (www.scantool.net); I haven't done a side by side comparison with others; but I am pretty happy with it. Although I've never had an issue with the Hilux, it's good to know I've got this in case something does go wrong.

The EDS won't work on a 2005 2006 model but this works on my 2005 d4d:

I might be wrong.

EDS website doesn't list 2005 as compatible.

Hi William,

Do you still have the OBDLink MX WiFi Scan Tool? If so, does it still do all that you want?

If not, have you changed to another device?

Kind regards,

Mark
