rattle on light load/acceleration

I have a similar noise on my 14 SR5 25000k. Only problem is i'll drive the car one time and it sounds smooth and a little earlier turbo response, then another time it sounds like shit from about 1500 to 3000 with what seems like less turbo response. If it sounded like it all the time i wouldn't care so much , but because half the time it sounds really smooth and quiet it pisses me off. Don't think its temp related it just seems very random.
Would love to find out why its intermittent.

Been reading a lot of threads in relation to noises / rattles / clatter and cannot understand or comprehend what this noise is. It is about the 2000rpm mark. It is not so much there when it is cold but rather when it is up to normal operating temperature.

Noise doesn't appear when standing still and revving through that range, however is there when accelerating under normal load. Any help is appreciated.

I had a weird noise/vibration when accelerating under load around that rpm, pulled the engine cover off and found a clamp loose on the intercooler to throttle body tigntened it up joise gone.

Swirl control valves r usually pretty noisey around those rpms. Mine r pretty noisey then, I can make mine go on and off with small fluctuations with the throttle.

I have taken it to Toyota and is allegedly the injectors. Vehicle booked in for a cold test even though it isn't there at cold. Can they test this under load as this is where the noise comes in?

Toyota say it is an injector but don't know which one. Will need another day to test to find out and then another day to fix under warranty.

now Toyota say it just needs a reflash of the ECU - had that done andthe noise is still there. Sounds like a spray can rattling. Not sure - now have to take it back to them again for a "mastertech" to come with me to tell me "that's the noise of a D4D" I guess.

Its been back and they now say that it is the 1 & 3 injectors (spray pattern) making the noise - still only when at operating temperature. Waiting now for Toyota to see if they will cover it.

Just had my 2013 Hilux with 40,000 on the clock with Southside Toyota in Brisbane for a few days now because of a rough idle especially when cold and the same rattle at 2000rpm. All is within spec according to the data so there's nothing they want to do for me. Pretty disappointed there's no easy fix for it cause it sounds like it's destroying itself!

as a general observation, the light load rattle seems to usually coincide with when the Target EGR position and Actual EGR position Vary a little bit. IE, its common to both be say 15% and min and both nearly 85% or whatever, but in the middle of the range they can ready upto 30% apart > at this point you get the rattle.

Yet to really test the theory or solution, but would be interested to get some of you blokes with techstream to see if the theory holds true

Also EGR blanking plates certainly dont seem to help this rattle (noticed some get significantly noisier when they're fitted)

I tell you one thing, hiluxes rattle a fair bit more than prados.
BDG injectors in 120 prados there anything from quiet to silent.
The hiluxes seem to get more rattle, but some are quiet.

The one I'm working on atm Prado rattling like death, pistons look ok, diagnostic ok, valve clearances good, compressions good, my guess Injectors stuffed. We will know for sure as soon as toll pull their finger out

I find the plate makes no difference to rattles.

I have the same rattle and at 1900 - 1950 rpms. Is there any fix or solutions for this? The noise is so damn annoying. 2013 SR5 with 59ks. Mine is also when warm or normal operating temperature - it is not there when cold through that rev range.

Man they all do it, some worse than others. It's likely to be the swirl control valves. A lad on here years ago left the vacuum hose of the valve actuator by accident when doing an egr clean and she was so quiet he thought something was wrong, then got and engine light. Hooked the hose back up, light goin and noisy again.

Oh and two stroke in the diesel did nothing for me but I only use caltex vortex

Try Flashlube Diesel Conditioner. It's a cetane booster.

so replacing the suction control valves will stop this annoying noise? Nope! They just rattle! I reckon there must be a lot fluttering in the intake air at that rev and it must rattle the butterflies. Thats my theory anyway, could be way of tho!
