Hi Team,

I to am suffering this horrid rattle (only happens when its hot with mine, starts at 1950 RPM and goes away, or gets drowned out after 3000 RPM.)

Southside Toyota in Brisbane say that its normal for the D4D and its the Pilot injectors coming in at that rev point (changes fuel air mix etc) but mine does get VERY noisy at times (tends to quieten down a bit on the way to the dealer when I want to show them its playing up again) - Re: Massey Ferguson! but they wont do anything about it.

I could live with it if it was there all the time but it on occasion goes away for 50kms or so and comes back.
Its been there since around 20kms on the clock and its now done almost 20,000. Just plain annoying.

Has anyone managed to get rid of this issue at all (without 2 Stroke oil in the fuel)??

I've driven a heap of other D4D's of late and they all have a slight rattle at 1950 RPM but none as bad as mine

Don't stress mate. Mine does the same. It's called "light load advance" the timing is advanced at those revs for fuel efficiency and emissions. Sounds f$@#&% terrible but totally normal. Keep your radio volume up and forget about it, they are a good engine and if well maintained they rarely f$@#&% up.

Two stroke made absolutely no difference to mine. Tried it more than once. No change at all. Can't imagine it does the supply pump/ rail/ injectors any good.

Try a different brand of diesel. Found shell diesel to be extremely noisy in my car. 2stroke hasn't reported any harm yet.

Ive tried constant use of each of the four majors (not even tried a low end fuel yet) with at least four tanks of each in a row. No change what so ever.

I have found however that the Lux gets a few more kms from BP Ultimate other than Mobile, Shell or Caltex.
Off for a country run tomorrow so will see how many kms I can get from it. (On its fifth straight tank of Ultimate)
Noise remains, going from your responses I'm simply going to have to put up with it until I can afford to change it to a 4.0V6.

What ratio of Oil to fuel have you used? and would this clog up the fuel filter earlier than expected at all?

My 2008 sr is noisy at around 2000rpm, but only when cold, once it gets to operating temp noise goes away, back to normal for a hilux anyway.
Also there is no cold knock at idle, other than this runs good and starts easily.
Any ideas?

I found the 2.5 to be a lot noisier than the 3.0 at 2000rpm

Glad this thread popped up too. i was always wanting to know what that stupid rattle noise was. mine comes on at about 1600 and goes away at about 2100 though which is abit different to what you guys are saying. I think ive been mistaking it for injector rattle cuz im paranoid about every noise my lux makes, thinking its going to blow up....

haha same. mine doesn't rattle when cold, only warm and between 1800-2100. sounds like it's normal then

Have you heard how a cold Nissan sounds? My neighbour has one and it's as loud as a lawn mower.

Hi guys just wondering if anyone found a cause/fix with this?! Seems like a common problem yet not much is said about it. Mine is pretty loud a little quieter the warmer the engine but not by much and all depends on pedal (throttle) position eg. smaller movements in and out = louder but putting the foot down = no noise. I'v had my injector values checked worst one was #3 at 2.3 the rest between +/- 1.2 (cold values) but from what everyone is saying it doesn't seem to be an injector issue. As soon as my tax comes in I'll be getting the erg/intake clean and putting on a catch can.

I had a MN 2.5 TD triton for 116000km and it sounded TERRIBLE in comparison to my 250000km D4D. Also had a d40 Pathfinder which was the worst i have ever heard. But still ran.

2 stroke oil in the fuel definitely makes an improvement with mine. i put 400ml to 68 Litres. Sounds and Runs like a New one.

maybe you are hearing the egr opening? it operates at those revs and low throttle. perfectly normal.

Same problem with mine. SR 2007 with 250000klms.
I had the 'ping' rattle (sounded bad!!) when cold on light acceleration so fitted a set or baileys injectors.
(was going to get new denso but baileys came with a 50k/3 year warranty)
The new injectors make it rev smoother & feel more powerful also almost no black smoke when gunning it to join freeway etc.
BUT at 2000rpm the rattle nosie is far worse than the old injectors. I have checked all the data, feedback etc & all seems normal. Drove a mates SR5 & that has similar noise but not as loud.
Seems we just have to put up with it or get some more insulation,I am also oing to take manifold off to clean it, I have already cleaned the EGR which was not too bad,
I find BP fuel the best now at 650+ klm per tank around town so happy with that.
