Just took it into toyota, they said the noise is coming from the 4th injector however everything is in spec.

Just wondering if it is worth taking it to someone else for another opinion?

No. 4 injector has the longest line from the fuel rail. It creates a lot of resonance and considering it's also the closest to the firewall it is easily heard in the cab. Yours is an SR like mine so we missed out on a fair bit of insulation/sound deadening the the SR5's have standard.
Take to another dealer if it puts your mind at rest but at some stage you'll realise that under the bonnet of your low spec SR is a nasty rattly horrible sounding diesel. I got used to mine but I hated it initially. I am in the process of placing Resomat in the cab to stop the rattle.

I tried diesel injector cleaner in a tank of fuel - if anything, probably made it worse!

I did the valve clearances recently (actually, Toyota did), but I'm going to check them and clean out the EGR at the same time and see if that changes anything, will let you know.

Cheers,

Sam.

heya mate, I dont suppose toyota gave you the inlet and exhaust valve clearances for each rotation of the crank. Looking to check mine.
Any help much appreciated.

Valve clearance (Cold):
Intake Exhaust
0.20 to 0.30 mm (0.008 to 0.012 in.) 0.35 to 0.45 mm (0.014 to 0.018 in.)
Cheers

G'day Guys , yes the Hilux cold rattle its a PITA , mine dose it between 1700 and 2200 RPM give or take a 100 or so RPM , no noise when warm

I would say it sounds a bit like a petrol motor pinging ( pinking )

I have been told it could possibly be hair line cracks in a Piston .

Its been doing it for 90000K at least , it burns no oil and goes ok .

I would of thought if it was a crack in a piston or 2 it would of dropped its guts big time by now .

Anyone else heard or been told about the Cracked Piston story

Maybe what you are hearing is the EGR opening and closing. It does this under light load at 1700-2200 rpm and when you add some throttle it goes (because the EGR valve closes) My 2013 has done this since new, maybe you just noticed it. :?

Cracked piston??? geeze I hope not for your sake... I think a cracked piston would have lunched the engine by now :o
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Thanks Gipsy , you could be right , no one has ever mentioned the EGR making a noise , yes the Cracked Piston Thing like I said above I would of thought the engine would of dropped its guts by now '

There is more to this story , I have had injectors replaced , that was supposed to stop the noise it didn't. The Hilux is back in the workshop with the injectors removed again now and they will poke a camera in the hole to inspect the pistons , so I'm told

I'm don't want to say much more ATM , but stay tuned

I will say if it is a Hairline cracks in some pistons there must be a bloody lot of Hilux's out there with em , after reading all the above and other threads , coz mine sounds like its exactly the same thing as others have explained ,
So I doubt that it is .

It's been a few weeks now , I couldn't be stuffed updating because I'm just pissed off with the whole job . Long story short , had a rattle for about 100k , went away when motor warmed up , ok bloody injectors , got em checked , sure enought it's the injectors so I'm told , ok replace em with baileys you bute new ones , no bloody different same rattle . Take it back to where it was done in Melbourne , they pull em out send em off , all ok so I'm told .
So I still have the same rattle , did it cost me 2.2k to fix something that wasn't broken or what . Yeah I'm pissed off but what can ya do .

The light throttle rattle is not an injector issue. I had both light throttle rattle and cold engine injector knock. Replacing the injectors removed the cold engine knock but made no difference to the light throttle rattle that occurs at all engine temperatures, especially when warm. I took it back and complained as I believed new injectors would fix both problems. The inlet manifold and EGR were removed and cleaned along with the sensors, injectors checked and in spec….no difference! Wallet $4000 lighter. Still have the rattles
I've just done 12,500k in 8 weeks and tried to cruise between 90 and 100kmh to get good fuel economy. The light throttle rattles almost drove me insane. In every gear in the bush you get the rattle when easing on and off the the pedal for bumps ,corners etc . You could play tunes with the rattle on the OTL
First step is to find what the rattle actually is. I have seen a single reference to swirl control valves but that was all. Sammysau has disconnected his EGR and the rattle was still there so that says to me that the noise is coming from somewhere else. Anyone actually know what it is?
Cheers

EGR opening and closing at mid-throttle Can't do much about it

Thing is all CRD vehicles make this noise at small throttle openings, most noticeable at 1500-2000rpm. Doesnt mean theres anything wrong with the vehicle until you get a cold knock which is very loud and metallic.

Go drive a DiD triton, or a colorado/dmax they all do it. Maybe drive some one elses lux and see if its the same noise do be sure?
