Would they only make noise when warm because as I said it is not there when cold?

Hi all,

Didn't want to start yet another thread on engine rattles so thought I'd bump this one...

Got an '06 'Lux, a touch under 120,000km travelled on the engine. I dunno if I was deaf to it before or something but I'm hearing a fair bit of engine rattle on the vehicle. I don't feel any mechanical issues with the vehicle but the rattle is certainly noticeable at idle and I do hear it after the car has warmed up as well as through the revs (though it's a lot quieter unless it's just the engine drowning it out?). However, this might just be the 2,000RPM rattle that's common as my daily drive has me sitting at 110km/h most of the way.

I don't think it's the light load rattle either as this noise sounds like it originates at the passenger side of the vehicle (when sitting in the driver's seat) and the light load rattle sounds like it's from the driver's side (when sitting in the driver's seat). Outside the vehicle, the noise sounds like it's dead centre of the vehicle (as the below videos demonstrate).

These are the noises I'm hearing - not my videos so thanks to the uploader. It pretty much mirrors what I hear except mine is a little less frequent? Probably grasping at straws here with my description.

VARIABLES: filled only with BP Ultimate Diesel (at the same servo 90% of the time) with 25ml of Liqui-Moly Diesel Clean & Boost every tank, injector seats exchanged by Toyota about 10,000km ago. I do get white smoke on start-up (not on actual start but maybe 2min. after start-up) but it's very minimal and I'm positive this is condensation build-up in the exhaust tip overnight. No smoke during regular driving or under load (had my father who had to follow me one day take note of any irregular exhaust emissions).

As far as my research has told me, this is a regular quirk of the 1KD-FTV due to the fuel pump assembly. My concern is that I can just hear it during revs. Am I being paranoid, or is this something that I should get looked at? My next service includes a check of the valve clearances so if it's related to the injectors, it should get picked up...

Just curious on this one - the 'Lux hasn't skipped a beat for me thus far so still very happy with my purchase :)

I have a 2013 sr5 and just had the egr turned off by going into the ecu (it was done by a diesel tuner).
My car has also had the rattle around 1900-2100rpm when cold. Since turning the egr off the rattle is now heard all through the rev range when warm. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this when changing how the egr operates? My car has only done 30,000 klms and always has shell or BP Diesel in it.

Ive had my injectors replaced twice in 2 years also fuel pump and rail replaced also replaced ecu
still have the noise of injector rattle knock from cold to about 1/4 temp
once warm its fine
i drive 100s of Hiluxs at work non of them sound like mine when cold
i have spoken to a specialist and they are thinking its a sensor telling my air fuel or injector incorrect data (pilot learn)
has anyone figured out this issue i have spent alot of money and still not getting anywhere

I have been chasing my noise for some time now. Rattles / metal on metal noise about 1900rpms. Mine is 2013 model SR5. I have had all the injectors replaced under warranty chasing this noise and now the guru at Toyota believes that it is when the EGR opens - not present at low ambient air temperatures. Starting to think about getting an EGR off module

any thoughts or experiences with this particular module or can any recommend a different module?

Hi gothebroncos
what you are talking about im sure is the EGR operating
ive had mine turned off (not blocked) through the ecu it made 5 times louder
best thing to do is install a catch can as you'll end up with black sut in your manifold etc

what i have i know is injector knock as ive had them replaced twice
it cant be my injectors that are gone im steering towards a certain sensor that is telling my engine / injectors different to what my engine wants in the mornings
it goes away once i hit 55 degrees engine coolant temp

I have been told that the noise coincides with the EGR opening - I have ordered a module to turn the EGR off - for when I am off road of course - should have it tomorrow or the next day - will advise if this stops it - when I go off road of course

Have you tried running a Diesel fuel additive?

Bump,
I too have had similar experiences with my 12 sr d4d auto 135 000 Kim
Over the last week the rattle has at best dissappeared and at worst is only slightly noticeable between 1900rpm - 2000rpm.
I have changed two things with my lux over the last week.
1. I filled up with caltex vortex diesel (previously bp)
2. I changed my driving style.
The way I drove it in the past was to accelerate normally applying even pressure on the accelerator and if i needed to stop or slow down i would lift off the accelerator quickly allowing the motor to drop revs quickly down to idle and coast until i reached the desired speed. Then when accelerating back up the rattle would always be there at that rev range.
The way i drive now is to accelerate the same but then when needing to slow down i release the accelerator slowly to allow the revs to come off slower,
Seems like its done the trick, for now any way.

At least two possibilities, driving style means a lot... Accelerate through the 1500-2500 RPM and the egr doesn't open hence no noise. Coming down in revs the egr will flow normally but with little noise. If it is at those Rev's it is most likely egr and part open throttle causes the noise.. wide open no noise. 2 maybe the fuel does make a difference... BP normally has good cetane at 50+ caltex not so sure, bio diesel will make a difference because with bio... First they are not required to tell you under 5% so you don't know... Different additives in the caltex may soothe the beast! Additives do make a difference, BP and caltex premium diesel has additives and bio is an unknown but likely both have it... Straight diesel fuel may come from Singapore and is likely to be straight diesel not bio, so there are plenty of variables and even an engineer will have difficulty in deciphering the issue without knowing what is in the fuel... Just keep using the one you like best... Oils ain't oils as they say
By the way, the rattle has no effect on your engine, turn up the stereo and enjoy the ride.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Light Rattle at 1800-2200 rpm

Postby Burb122 on Mon, 24 Apr 2017 1:17 +0000

Hey guys I have only been a hilux owner for 2 weeks. It a 2011 facelift SR5 D4D.

Here is a video on you tube for you guys to hear. It starts at about 3 seconds in and again about 17 second into the video.

What could it be. Is it ok?

Hard to say but it doesn't sound too bad. Maybe just get ya injector feedbacks checked to be safe.

Is that a worth while test? As in is it a good indication of injector health?

Feedback is a good indication of weather they are shagged or not yes.
