Hey, can you elaborate a bit on this? What is it exactly? New to all this kind of stuff. Is it something the dealer can do?

It basically adjusts the pilot injecton that happens prior to the main injection and is said to sometimes help when experiencing "knocking"

It made no difference in the end to my low load knock. But others have had luck.

You can get a Chinese copy of techstream and a cable of fleabay for about 50 bucks and do it yourself.

Easy pilot learn.... Disconnect the battery for 10 minutes and all reset, see if that helps. Sam, your description sounds like the regular egr opening and closing... Perfectly normal.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

I think it might be the swirl control valves in the intake manifold. Aparantly they rattle at about this rom range. And they are there to help/improve low end torque

There's a very good chance it is the swirl control valves in the intake manifold. Aparantly they rattle around this rpm/load range. Nothing you can do.i had my own thread on this.

Off topic a bit but Hiluxs are like Helicopters. ( Helicopter mechanical) The technology is 10 years behind the automotive industry.

I could not believe how held back/rugged a 2011
Hilux was compared to a 2005 Suzuki swift. I now it's a "hilux" but they are kinda shite when it comes to noise rattles and comfort. For the price you pay

My 2011 hilux started making this rattle ( low oil sound ) from around 50k , I'm now at 65k still can't find fault
I have had the injectors tested with no fault , oil change done every 5k since new .
Last mechanic I took it to last week said " hilux's are like that , they are a noisy engine"
The sound has me worried that it might be doing damage .

would be great to know exactly whats happening and why. in my mind it seems like when the valves are starting to open, the high velocity air flowing around them creates a low pressure zone which acts to close the valve. like a resonant flutter sort of thing. that said i dont know why the actuator wouldn't prevent this from happening? why i rotate the swirl shaft by hand it all seems tight and highly sprung.... dunno. its giving me the shits tho, anyone replaces intake manifold to rectify this? or anyone got images of the swirl control valves up close? i'd like some confidence that the valves are not going to break off the shaft and cruise into my cylinders! Haven't read of this ever happening, but you never know... brody

1kd rattle gone at 3k rpm

Postby roddie1154 on Mon, 18 Jun 2018 8:05 +0000

hi, does anyone have this problem also? there's a rattle or knocking sound but goes away at 3k rpm.

I've cleaned the intake and egr and blocked it with a 7mm hole blank. also serviced my injectors.
new air filter
new fuel filter
serviced and changed the motor oil
and the sounds still there

some people say it's a cracked piston or a bad liner.. but wouldn't the sound just get worse at higher rpm? plus the hilux still has alot of power in it

Any progress on this? Mine has started to diesel knock on light loads, funnily enough only after its first service under my ownership, at a reputable mechanic.

Looks like My Hilux has developed the light load rattles. Only between 1800-2100rpm and only when accelerating slightly.

The problem is that I have a v6 Hilux! Has anyone else with petrol power experienced this? Only started on Tuesday when I was driving to the coast, never noticed it before.
The more fuel I use, the more fun I have!

I think it's an injector problem, have a look here:
