Lugging / vibration

Postby Cruiserdog on Fri, 17 Jan 2014 5:27 +0000

Have a nagging problem with lugging / vibration / lag at exactly 2000rpm. It's a March 05 with 162,000 on the clock running 265/75r16 rubber.
Currently 4 & 5 gear are the main problem. It takes ages and alot of vibration to accelerate over 2000rpm in 5 gear which is smack on 100km.
I've put new injectors in and no change. Turning the chip on and off no change. I did feel a little bit better response after replacing the map filter, but only a little.
I also have a donaldson secondary fuel filter if that has any bearing on flow rates etc.
All the specs were good when toyota checked it on the scan tool last month (rail pressure etc).

I am out of ideas. Maybe the transmission is on its way out?

Has anyone had a similar problem or can shed some light on what could be the cause?

Is the vibration associated with engine revs or road speed? You mention 2,000 rpm along with 4th and 5th gear along with 100km/hr? Does it vibrate where going past 2,000rpm in 3rd? Or if you run it up through 100km/hr in 3rd? This will help identify if it's an engine thing or a driveline thing.
Cheers Rod

I'm pretty certain it's related to the rev range at 2000rpm. It's just that in 5th that 2000rpm is exactly 100kmph. Overtaking etc requires me to drop back a gear where as before it would just wind out. 3rd gear is fine now it used have the same thing hard to accelerate off 2000rpm but replacing the map filter seems to have improved that. Honestly i have not wound it out to 100km in third. Is that safe??

It is quite difficult to articulately describe the the problem. But basically if you go to accelarate off that 2000rpm there is a vibration and it struggles and them eventuallly after a couple of secs takes off as normal. As soon as you accelarate to 2200rpm theres no dramas, just that one rev range thats the problem.

This is why it's so confusing because i'm torn between a problem with the engine or a worn transmission.
Especially after that map filter replacement gave a little improvement.

Tail shaft issue would give the same as well. If you get desperate remove the tail shaft and drive it in 4wd see if it disappears.

Roo that's something i never, but should of, considered.
I've looked at the tail shaft but not to point of taking it off. The only time it's been touched was for the clutch replacement but they match marked the flanges. Maybe that is the next step to take it off and get it's balanced checked.
I'll check out both those things.

Just checked then and all the mounts are intact including the gearbox one.

I'm getting the clutch checked tomorrow just tick it off the list of possible causes. Had an NPC conversion fitted last in november last year. I don't think it will be the cause but at least i'll know for sure.
Spoke to a mechanic yesterday and he reckons it could be a cylinder not performing and that is why i'm feeling it in 4 & 5 when it's under load. Bit dubious about that answer but.

Sounds like a safe bet that yours is a clutch if it's shuddering combined with the smell.

Hey mate, thoroughly check your engine mounts, I suffer the same issue as you (But mainly 4th) and I have looked at my engine mounts about 4 times. Just than I had a really good look around and found my drivers side engine is starting to tear in half. Wasn't the easiest thing to spot.

Yeah i've had a look even got the tyre lever and had a go but your right they hard to get a look at especially the drivers side.
I might have another look again now though!! Thanks mate.

(I'm really hoping it is a simple fix like that!!)

Sorted the problem today with the help of talktheroo. Cleaned and rodded the intercooler and the vibration was my tail shafts were too dry so lesson learnt there, more grease more often!! Apart from that the old girl is running well now.
Thanks for your help John it was much appreciated.

If you're getting vibration straight after a new clutch fitted, the clutch plate may be the problem. I've had a couple of cars over the years, where the splined boss in the centre of the clutch plate was not in the centre, brand new clutch plate. Not something you can see by eye. Can also be caused by worn spigot bush/bearing but that wouldn't suddenly become a problem after new clutch.
Regards Chris.

The vibration is coming on under strong acceleration in 4th and 5th. Any other gear / rpm there is no issue. I recently got a chip aswell which has dramatically increased torque. I just sounds like a bearing or gear chattering under load. Probably worn out.
