Hi all -

Mentioned a few times that I've had some smoke issues as of late. Been monitoring this closely and tried all the usual maintenance items (see link) short of the injectors. Think I've got a lead.

Ran another diagnostic tonight (see here) and noticed changes in my saved recordings. My 2016 diagnostic recordings show that my Target EGR Position and EGR Lift Sensor Volt % are much tighter including when the Target is above 50%. My 2017 diagnostic recordings (from tonight) show that the values are much further apart, and my EGR Lift Sensor Volt % never gets over 45%.

Guess my next question is...where to go from here?

For those running diagnostics and looking for references, I'm not sure whether this was already posted but it may help you decipher what's "normal". From GSIC:

Probably still consult with a professional who knows the meaning behind the data though.

Afternoon gents. Huge apologies for the long post and all the data.

I have a rather perplexing issue with my hilux, ended up purchasing techstream + cable and eventually got it working.

Background - 2010 3ltr D4D, just ticked over 109000km, no issues earlier this year. Drives fine around town, I only noticed an issue early May on the highway after a period of driving, real power loss then the engine and gear lever would shake like crazy once I slowed and came to a stop. Leave it for a short while, it would be pretty much back to normal.

Note - no smoke at all, no cold start knock, only the issue of low power then the engine shake after around 30minutes of engine running (this isn't just under load as while trying to get drivers to work for the cable I sat in the car idling for nearly an hour, first thing I see on techstream are huge injector values in 2 and 3)

While in Mackay recently I got advice to change fuel filter as it could be bad fuel and added a bottle of injector cleaner. Things improved (wasn't slowing on a slight incline!), but it would still do the same after a period on the highway.

With techstream hooked up today and reading these threads I took data for cold start at idle, then warm at idle and at speed, nothing really standing out on the figures. Driving around town for 15 minutes or so it seems fine so I head to the highway. 15 minute drive, fine, head down a rural road up to 120kph briefly to test :ugeek: , seems ok, slow into a small residential area and I notice the engine shake and injector 2 and 3 are up around +4 and +5.
I take more data at idle, at normal speed and values are slowly lowering. Switch off engine for a while and back on, values are lowering. I drive home with injector values between 0 and 2 roughly, when I reverse onto my drive, injector values crank right up again.

My SCV is the newer, longer style, can't clean that out. Pressure often seems out by a fair bit but willing to listen to advice.

I've done plenty of research but can't seem to find anything quite like this case. Data included below for a few situations. Plenty more available if needed  really would appreciate some expert advice as living in Bowen I don't have many options to see somebody local and hope to save some time and money by doing the hard work up front.

Thanks. Mike

Your injection feedback becomes pretty high after the couple of minuet wait. Might be a sign of injector wearing out

Hi Guys. I seem to be low down on power with a fair bit of smoke.I've put it down to a bad suction control valve I think. I have an ecu shop super 4 and have thought it may have something with the programing. I have turned off and the values don't change.Does anyone else have a monster max or similar to compare to with it turned on or off

Agreed it certainly isn't right, however I wondered if it is an issue with something else considering it doesn't happen for a good while after the engine is warm. Like is it still a bit of bad fuel in the system?

For instance if I give the cold and warm initial values, or have them tested by somebody, they'd possibly not find an issue. Fortunately I don't do much driving around Bowen so I'm not put out too far at the moment, but I'd like to have a better idea before I go to the local Toyota garage with a bit of diagnosis.

If it may be fuel, what do I do about it? Secondary filter I think I will invest in anyway, but do I need to drain the tank etc?

Second filter isn't the problem here but is a good idea anyhow. Water/crud is a big problem which a pre filter reduces the potential issues. If you have injector issues the pre filter won't help now but may in the future. If you are worried about the fuel in the tank, fit a pre filter and put some fuel doctor in the tank, from super cheap.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

hi all,

have been reading some of the other info on here and have noticed some differences in my readings with my map. i am only sitting at 80-86kpa warm or cold and 160 kpa under load on full boost. i have an egr blank plate with 7mm hole if that could be a factor? just trying to work out why its so low. i regularly clean maf and map filter and have recently had a full intake clean which made no difference to the reading, but made it so much more responsive. it isnt feeling any slower than expected and ive actually had mates comment on how hard it comes on to boost for a turbo diesel. ots currently at 270000k's and is a 2007 model dont know if that helps but any advice will be appreciated. cheers

not sure of anyone is monotoring this but i replaced my map sensor with an OEM one same part number and now my MAP at idle is 167kpa... was 80kpa before the change.
not really sure whats going on it sounds like a v8 and is blowing plumes of black smoke! (have got brand new hi flow injectors now not sure if that changed anything)

would really appreciate any advice cause it seems like its gone from one extreme to another

What came first - high flow injectors or the new MAF sensor
Assuming you mean MAF not MAP?

That looks very high based on the ‘normal’ figures quoted above (~100kpa at idle). Black smoke sounds like over fueling, so that reading ain’t right. Calibration issue with new sensor? Would an ecu reset help here? ie Disconnect battery for 30 min. Otherwise I’d be putting my old map sensor back in, until you can figure it out.

yeah i have reset the ecu and still the same. i tried another map sensor of a mates hilux this morning. 156kpa at idle, drove nicely but threw a p1251 stepper mottor circuit (intermitten fault) once i got to about 80km/h in 4th.. removed it and replaced the old one (76kpa) drives ok and doesnt throw faults but still reading very low so i am a bit confused as to why im getting such different readings

Is your mates lux a newer model? Maybe they’ve changed the map spec at some stage and your mates and the new one you bought are the same.

Got myself a new to me 2006 Euro 3 manual D4D with 190,000km on it. Got my cable and software today and did my first Techstream run as I wanted to make sure the injectors are on point.

From the looks and based on what I have read 1 and 2 look like they need replacing. Do most replace individual injectors or all at once?

These results are hot but I watched from cold and not much changed.

All 4 at once is ideal. Those readings can mean that the injectors are compensating for other problems.

Hi ALL!

I hope everyone is still okay in looking at techstream data, as I have a small situation.

I recently noticed my injector feedback values were heading towards the need for replacement; NUMBER 3 (as is always the case) just reached out-of-spec and the other THREE injectors showed feedback values >1.5 mm3/st.

So, I replaced ALL the pre-/non-DLC Toyota injectors with BRAND NEW Denso DLC injectors (095000-7780) and BRAND NEW Genuine Toyota Fuel Lines/Pipes (under the advice on this forum from posts by TheRoo and Anthony Fourby).

I had Techstream already - I used this to monitor the feedback values. So I entered the compensation codes BUT I did not want to risk doing the ECU reflash that others have mentioned for DLC injectors being introduced to an 'ECU that did NOT previously have DLC injectors' (as other forum members have mentioned is necessary for smooth operation).

My problem: getting a slight engine rattle and checked the new injector (one-day old) feedback values and got the data below; notice Number 3 and Number 1. Number 1 came down as the vehicle warmed up to 40C.

I will try and take the Hilux for a drive and see if there are any changes following higher engine temperatures.

For now, my details are as follows:

A couple of extra posts - if the admin can assist in cleaning them up.

My apologies!
