f$@#&% that soot is bad i don't notice mine blow much out and it doesn't get that black but i do notice carbon stain sort of discolours my tub>< might contact clean those two filters.. do i just spray contact cleaner into them??

Also make sure your air cleaner is spotless.

already cleaned my MAF about 2 months ago, and my air filter is pretty clean its only a few months old.. will take both those little drum looking things off and fill with CC... whats inside them i want to ensure they're totally dry before i put it back on? i assume they don't come apart

Number 2 looks like it will be the first one that will go out of range.
Just keep on checking them at cold start (less than 40 degrees C coolant temperature) as part of your 10,000 km schedule, mate. That's how you catch the buggers out.

I have a 2014 SR5 T/Diesel Hilux with 5800kms on the clock. Every time I go over 2500rpm a puff of smoke is visible from the review mirror. I know generally diesels blow a little bit from time to time but not like that.

It has soot build up on the underside of the tow bar and is staining the underside of the chrome bumper already when its 3 months old.

I took to Toyota and they told me that this is normal and the engine in fine etc. Is this normal????

I've got a 2014 as well, I have never seen it blow any smoke, even when stomping on it. Granted I don't watch the mirror, but I reckon if there were that much smoke coming out I'd notice it.

EDIT: updated diagnostics here. From what I've collated from the forum, the biggest stand-out is my Target EGR Position versus EGR Lift Sensor Voltage % - rather than being within 15 of eachother, they're 40 apart.

Hi all - I'm having similar symptoms to this now.

'06 with 141,000km. Getting a puff of black smoke under acceleration (near or above 2,000RPM). It's only a puff but it happens consistently enough for me to enquire. Hitting it in second gear gets a bit of a plume but that's expected when you're hitting it...

Did all the usual maintenance suspects last night. The MAF sensor was a little dirty on one side and the MAP filter was clear but the smoke persisted. I also have a catch can fitted which I emptied - the oil was black and it wasn't full.

Injectors, fuel lines, suction control valve - all replaced 21,000km ago. EGR and Intake Manifold was also cleaned at the same time (catch can went in BEFORE the clean).

Serviced 2,000km ago, so the oil's fresh and all filters were replaced (air, fuel, oil - all genuine Toyota, and a new filter for the secondary fuel filter).

The only recent work done was the replacement of my rocker cover (old one was was cracked) which included new gaskets and associated fittings, and a clean/degrease of the area affected by the crack. I also thought it might've had to do with my battery being disconnected and thus the ECU reset? Unsure. I also had the clutch and brakes overhauled but that's completely unrelated I'd think...

Fuel economy is also down. I usually fill up at 640km (prior to the warning light) but my second last tank was 580km at the warning light. Last tank was 620km before the warning light.

This is my last diagnostic (September 2016). I have access to Techstream so I'll run another on Saturday.

My next steps are to check hose fittings, hose clamps, sensors, wiring, and reset the ECU (via battery disconnect and headlights as boxhead55 recommended).

Is there anything else that should be on my agenda before considering bringing it to a mechanic?

Hey Guys, I have a 2012 Toyota Hilux with 138,000 km on the clock. I noticed after installing a reverse camera that when i change gears on acceleration i get a puff of black smoke. It only happens for the first 10 min of driving while the engine is cold. Once the engine warms up the clouds of smoke stop. FYI i live in a warm climate. Typically around 35 degrees celcius and high humidty 80% or more and no winter.

Just looking for some advice on what could be the cause. I have cleaned the MAF and replaced the fuel filter. I have also cleaned the EGR and elbow down to the intake. Over Christmas i have some time off work and was going to remove the intake manifold to clean all the carbon and soot out.

Has anyone on here had problems with Inlet manifold bolts snapping on removal?

I haven't pulled mine apart to do a clean just yet. Last time i worked on an exhaust manifold i had a bolt snap on me. It was a pain to remove and i had to put helicoils into the block.

Whats the chance of this happening on the inlet manifold bolts? I know exhaust manifolds operate much hotter then the inlet but just wondering before i start if anyone has had this problem?
